Skip to comments.barkley: 'every black parent in the south' would be in jail for disciplining kids

Barkley told CBSs Jim Rome that if tough standards were applied, that would lead to a lot of black parents potentially being in jail.
ROME: It doesn't matter where you're from, right is right, and wrong is wrong. It doesn't matter where you're from
BARKLEY: I don't believe that because listen we spank kids in the South. I think the question about did Adrian Peterson go overboard. But listen Jim we all grew up in different environments. Listen, every black parent in my neighborhood in the South would be in trouble or in jail under those circumstances.
BARKLEY: Oh yeah, I got beat with switches. First of all, I don't like the term, when the media talks about it and somebody just said on television, beating a child. Listen
ROME: That's what that was, Chuck
BARKLEY: Well, we call it spanking or whooping our kids. ROME: If I see open wounds and bruises throughout a body that is a beating.
BARKLEY: Sure. Those pictures are disturbing. I think Adrian said he went overboard. But as far as being from the South, we all spanked our kids. I got spanked, me and my two brothers. ROME: Again Chuck, not now. 1964 is one thing, 2014 is another.
ARKLEY: And thats fair. I totally agree with that. Maybe we need to rethink it but I think we have to really be careful trying to teach other parents how to discipline their kids. Thats a very fine line.
ROME: Alright, some disagreement here.

Far less looting back in 1964....if I remember correctly.
Do you suppose that there might be some sort of correlation there?
Aren’t most of them in jail anyway?
You guessed wrong.
Most people need a whipping nowadays. All these spoilt rich kids with their “afluenza” nonsense.
if we are to take him at his word, which I will for now, Peterson simply though his actions were good discipline, and he did not mean to harm his son...
did he go to far, too harsh, yes of course....
I'm torn on this situation because I think we need all fathers and especially black fathers to become a bit more involved with their kids including and especially discipline...
so I'm not going to pounce on the guy, at least not now....
Hell when I went to school some teachers had paddles and the Principe might have a razor strap .heaven help you if your old man heard you were bad in school the problem is there are no men in the house..have not seen the Adrian Peterson video
“...we have to really be careful trying to teach other parents how to discipline their kids.”
Before talking about “discipline” blacks need to start mastering the “parenting” part.
They said the same thing about Michael Vick’s dog fighting. It’s just a “cultural” thing.
Barkley is remembering how it was done 40 years ago, not now. But even then, the marks Peterson left on a four year old were too much. Peterson lost a child to an abusive boyfriend of his baby mamma just a year ago and then he beats his kid? He’s a pathetic excuse for a father
I have to disagree. One laceration-That’s taking it a bit too far. If the photo’s I saw were legit, he was either beating the kid, or too out of control to see what he was doing.
BTW, I’m a firm believer in the judicious use of pain when raising children. We had a nifty little device called “The Rod.” It was a thin fiberglass rod with a nice soft foam grip. It always hurt them more than it hurt me, but never enough to do more than sting. None of our kids ever did stupid stuff like time out.
I got the switch and the wooden spoon ... the “cucciara”
Every black family disciplines their children?
Since when? Ha!
Take a look at our society and tell me that makes sense.
The nuns hit us with rulers LOL
Barkley is correct.
Here’s a black family disciplining a black child...
(up front, this isn’t every black family. There are decent black families out there, but folks will know what I am addressing here)
Tyrell, I see here that you were given punishment at school today for stealing the Larry Parnell’s textbook, and then setting it on fire. What do you have to say for yourself young man?
Tyrell, “Well mom, he brought his book to class and made the rest of us look bad. I couldn’t let that fly, so I took it and burned it.”
Okay Tyrell, I just wanted to talk with you and let you know that it was actually a white police officers fault that you did this. It’s centuries of racial hatred that caused you to react like this, and I think it’s important that you be aware of that.
You go outside and play with your gang friends now.
If you spank your kids, it must always be at a time well after the behavior that called for the spanking.
I got paddled twice in high school.
Fell asleep in 10th grade algebra - Teacher was the basketball coach. Extenuating circumstances - I had a morning paper route.
Forgot to get a 12th grade Civics test (I made 100% on the test) signed by my Mom - Teacher was the football line coach, th e"Board of Education" was a 1"x4"36" pine board with 1" holes drilled in it.
Ouch, but hey, rules are rules. Nipped my criminal career in the bud!
I got a spanking from a teacher once.
Learned me to be more careful when I was trying to get away with things.
Didn’t hurt me a bit.
