Exclusive: Angry with Washington, 1 in 4 Americans open to secession
Reuters ^ | 19 Sep 2014 | Scott Malone

The failed Scottish vote to pull out from the United Kingdom stirred secessionist hopes for some in the United States, where almost a quarter of people are open to their states leaving the union, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Some 23.9 percent of Americans polled from Aug. 23 through Sept. 16 said they strongly supported or tended to support the idea of their state breaking away, while 53.3 percent of the 8,952 respondents strongly opposed or tended to oppose the notion.

The urge to sever ties with Washington cuts across party lines and regions, though Republicans and residents of rural Western states are generally warmer to the idea than Democrats and Northeasterners, according to the poll.

Anger with President Barack Obama's handling of issues ranging from healthcare reform to the rise of Islamic State militants drives some of the feeling, with Republican respondents citing dissatisfaction with his administration as coloring their thinking.

But others said long-running Washington gridlock had prompted them to wonder if their states would be better off striking out on their own, a move no U.S. state has tried in the 150 years since the bloody Civil War that led to the end of slavery in the South.

"I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference anymore which political party is running things. Nothing gets done," said Roy Gustafson, 61, of Camden, South Carolina, who lives on disability payments. "The state would be better off handling things on its own."

Time to rid ourselves of the organized crime rings that have dominated DC for too long. BO is the head snake followed by holder and the rest of this gang.

Being angry at Washington D.C. isn’t reason enough for secession. We’ve got plenty of recourse before you do that.

But some folks are lazy and see secession as some easy solution, and those movements ultimately fail because there is a real difference between real oppression and being just ticked off.

Money is part of it,

but the one driving motivation that libs have against federalism and individual governance is CONTROL.
They can’t stand the thought of someone living outside of their control.

Interesting you say this. I am a widowed Dad of 2 very sharp and aware sons. One a college soph and the other a HS senior. They are both urging me to head for Texas once the youngest graduates HS as we have zero ties to where we live currently. Then they want to join me in Texas when they get out of college. :-)

By what I saw visiting, most of Texas is ready to secede from US and to become a province of Mexico.

I would like to see Texas, Oklahoma and the states of the Old South secede and form a new nation called the Free States of America.

Americans seem to vote themselves higher and higher minimum wage, they simply do not want to work blue collar jobs unless given a white collar salary. Socialist Seattle has a ridiculous $15 minimum wage and it is one of the whitest remaining areas in the country with relatively few illegals. The high minimum wage is a result of a century of indoctrination into socialism, it is not going anywhere without a complete social revolution.

Yes, in some cases. But those pure commie nations have lower wages.

Our commies insist on getting money for nothing (welfare is the ultimate), more bucks for less work and more pain in the$!$@#!.

Also, there are many non-American companies sourcing here. So it really doesn’t mean that much.

Let me do my own pool here in my house right now. OK, it is 100% between my wife and I in Florida.

I’m open to voting them all out.

Everyone in the Senate longer than 3 terms ... OUT
Everyone in the House longer than 5 terms .... OUT

.... and that’s if they are doing their jobs ... OUT sooner if not.

I think we are (badly) underestimating the determination of countries such as China.

China is now either number one, or number two in global production.

America stop fooling around. Bring back American industry.

I know I am virtually alone in this thought, but we are sleeping.

Even conservatives are sleeping.

Bring back jobs.

Last sentence? maybe. We sure have a lot of spoiled-rotten Americans, so the mantra “doing work Americans won’t” rings true to me.

It is not “big business” that uses the illegals; it is small business, personal business, etc. They can get away with under-the-table payments. No way big business can.

There is a whole bunch of commie/fascist regulation that needs to go away in order to right this ship. It’s not just one facet. They all hinge together.

Would you like to pay $50,000 salary to a dude who turns screws?

Or would you rather pay $1/hr?

Get rid of these rules and unions which strong-arm and strangle us (and take away freedom) and you can have those jobs back.

Americans still get jobs from foreigners, too.

It just doesn't make sense to me that the US Chamber and so many in "big business" support amnesty. I cannot see any redeeming political or economic value to it. In fact, all I see is political and economic harm.
