Linux Mint 17.1 is the best OS I have ever used.
Still have XP, 7, 8.1 and MacOSX. Linux blows them all away while even running on half the hardware.
LOL I miss Group windows on the desktop. ;-)
They are giving it away because they don’t want a repeat of the holdouts hanging on to XP. Much easier to support one operating system than three.
Hmmmm. Actually I have 8.1 running on a Core i-7 machine with a new solid-state C:/ Drive. Lightning fast.
Windows 8.1 seems fine to me. The mix of old and new interfaces takes a little getting used to but once you do it's actually quite nice. I need a new (but actually very old fashioned) drop-down application/favorites menu like a hole in the head. The big and little icon scheme is, in fact, very intuitive and highly customizable.
I'm going to stick with 8.1 unless there is some really, really good reason to change.
So that legacy software won't mistake it for Windows 95.
Will it become subscription based?
“Free” the first year and then some amount of money for all updates/patches each year following?
I think everyone is attempting to rent you their software. In fact, isn’t MS Office now subscription based? I know much of Photoshop stuff is.
Interesting how folks impressions differ. Win8 disgusted me so much that I rehabilitated and old dual-core AMD Athlon 64 FX machine (former WinXP) with Ubuntu ... just to see if Linux is where I want to go. I’m impressed with the OS ... it gave my old beast a new lease on life ... and I’m willing to go that way if necessary.
Yep. So long as they keep putting out security patches - which should be another 5 years - Win 7 will do just fine.
To sync version numbers for enterprise.
newegg.com has it. A little pricey, though. You might be better off buying an all new computer, with Win7 on it.
Wonder how they will go about distributing the free version. Hopefully not an eternal download like my wife's 8.1 upgrade. If so, I well pass, not going to overwrite a perfectly good installation.
Windows 10 is aimed at traditional desktop PC users who are comfortable with the keyboard, mouse and menu driven commands.
Microsoft has realized what worked with Windows worked and live tiles will appear only on tablet PC’s. The OS will automagically configure Windows to run in either the familiar desktop mode or the tablet mode depending on what device its being installed.
That’s what it should have done with Windows 8 in the first place.
Want to know how badly Apple and Linux fans are against Microsoft in General? Read the replies in this threa. When one argument fails, a new one arises. Oh it’s free, that must mean “insert new argument”.
The most important thing is will Windows 10 run Total Annihilation?
Seems like it puked up a message to that effect while it was installing. Both machines I'm trying it on are of the large multi-monitor, keyboard and trackball variety.
Microsoft is phasing out expensive preloaded CDs and in the future, users can upgrade their current Windows by downloading Windows 10 to their desktop and then copying it to a USB flash drive - cheap, reliable and plentiful these days, rebooting their PC and following the installation prompts.
I think that’s a viable strategy for Microsoft and Linux has been doing that for years now, with great success.
BTW, Win10TP gives a hint of live tiles in the start button menu. It sort of works where the screen full of live tiles just annoyed me.
Apply to infested area. This is not a toy. Do not eat. Do not operate heavy machinery while using this product.
MS said in their keynote that updates are free for the duration of the device(what that means exactly is anyones guess, could mean just 10.x upgrades, or what). What I do know is MS is going to a consumption model for its consumer grade software.
Their money is not going to be made selling the OS, but rather through apps. Oh want a media player? Heres one for xx. Want to play XBox games.. It’s a smart move.
Of course the welfare linux folks who think all software should be free won’t like it. But oh well, luckily they are a tiny minority.
I’ll wait, thank you. W7 working just fine and recovers from 75+% of apparent crashes.
