When programming for Windows 95 and 98, most coders used shortcuts and wildcards to refer to systems in installers.
So, for instance, if an installer has specific instruction sets for Windows 95 vs. Windows 98, they would use a string syntax with a wildcard like “Windows 9*” to catch both.
Any instance of Windows 9 would be caught up in this mess and cause confusion and errors.
Same for us. Win 7 is the first MS platform that has worked well for us.
Is W-10 that finger-screen BS?
Apple has offered free OS X upgrades on their computers for a few years, so maybe MS thinks they have to do the same to compete.
Windows doesn't only run on proprietary hardware, like OS X, but maybe MS gets enough licensing fees from all the PCs it's pre-installed on to cover the cost of free upgrades and still stay profitable.
It would have to be very OLD software...............like I use............8^)
I wondered how long it would take the Linux Losers to jump on this thread. Didn’t take long did it.
Thanks! I got the gear. May have to split my 1TB drive up.
Or buy a HuGh thumb drive
With respect to Windows 7, it seems to boot faster. The "Start" button contains the traditional menu of programs in folders, but also shows a small collection of " live tiles" representing the most frequently/recently used programs. I think they've done a better job of organizing the system tools (YMMV). They CLAIM that the kernel is more secure and more efficient. Whatever. I'm not in a position to test that.
We have a computer here at work that still uses this version...................
Ahhhh ... makes sense. Back in those days, I was a UNIX geek.
Does that mean that we have 1 year to accept the upgrade, or that after one year we don't get something that other windows 10 computers get?
Based on what I've seen in Beta the move might be justified. But the rollout has to be flawless. We'll see how they do.
Lol. Yur precogniciant or sumthin.
Our company is currently in the process of kicking all the Windows XP machines off the network “for security reasons”. And yet they make us use Internet Explorer 8. Go figure.
No, I’m an American.
I’ll take it! :-) I’ve seen several online movies of the initial demonstration version of Windows 10 and there actually is a lot to like about it.
I hate them all. I’d still be on XP if the cipher and stuff wasn’t so far behind... it kinda kills it that I can’t connect to a lot of stuff with XP so I had to switch to windows 7. I tried to force myself to use win8, I stuck with it for like 8 months but I just couldn’t take it anymore. I absolutely loath the “interface”. As much as I hate dealing with Linux, i just might have to make the jump if MS sticks with this version of the GUI. I haven’t bothered trying v10 yet. No idea what it looks like. I know a couple of my guys are playing with the preview but I haven’t seen it yet.
No, I'm not going to go dig it up, but I said something like "To get people to adopt the latest version of Windows, they'll eventually resolve to give it away for free like Apple does."
Oh, the catcalls I drew. Now look.
That’s funny, we have one that we still have to support running 3.1. It’s an NC controller gateway and the software company went out of biz years ago, not upgrades or support. Still works great. I have backups of backups of that stupid thing just in case. I’m a little panicky about losing it.
I agree. Where can I get a copy of Win7?
