Thanks for pointing this out.

In general it is good to refrain from things with bad connotations. I already pointed out how even proposing to “f-ck” with one’s own wife would have a different connotation than proposing to have sex. The word has been dragged through the gutter so much that it carries bad connotations.

Anyhow, I think, lesson learned, we should pass forward from such situations. We don’t need to wallow in them. God forgives.

The bowdlerizing of the letter does suggest a different intent. I don’t believe Sarah really wants even Michael M++re (crosshairs? lol) to be condemned to hell because that is not even God’s preference. If Michael Moore goes to hell that is not God’s fault but Michael Moore’s. But she vigorously rejects his baloney.

I don’t think it was the wisest thing in the world, though. Lets think of how we can do things better in the future, looking at the mistakes of our past.

And a registration mark only makes sense as such on mechanically printed material... this obviously wasn’t... now maybe it is crosshairs.

What else could FUC_ expand out to if not the famous F-word? That might mean something else pertinent to the context? An inside joke?

I don’t agree we are swallowing camels here.

I am more concerned about her decision to QUIT her job as governor than this photo.

I'll be more concerned about this when she *officially* tosses her hat into the ring, which I highly doubt she's going to do despite the 15 threads here today saying that she's "thinking about it".

- presuming 80 million gun owners, which I think might be low.

That was the figure the NRA was using in 1989 so it probably is a bit low. By 30 or 40 million perhaps.

That was one of the most commendable and courageous acts of her political career.

There has never been the slightest chance that she is ever going to run. She’s having too much fun and making too much money with the pundit road show, all that would go away if she ran. She’s actually in a situation where winning would be worse than losing, she’d actually have to do political stuff and pass laws and all that boring stuff that makes people hate you.

Whatever. You made this about me, when it’s about Palin. Whom I formerly endorsed until she has proven herself to be in it for the fame and cash. Good on her! She throws red meat for the for the masses, and then endorses a co-democrat ticket for AK governor. I’m long done with her.

It does. The truth about her came out. I met her in person just before she ran for VP, we had a nice talk, she thanked me for my service. I think she’s a great lady over all, but not Presidential material.

That’s not always a good thing.

Martin Luther, being a Medieval German and not a middle class American suburbanite, could turn a filthy phrase with the skill of a rap artist. It was acceptable in German society of that day even for an Augustinian monk.

Is "turning a filthy phrase with the skill of a rap artist" supposed to be a good thing? Maybe I just haven't been reading the right threads, but this is probably my first time here seeing the skill of rap artists presented in a possibly positive light. (It's probably also my first time here seeing Martin Luther compared to a rap artist. I got 95 theses, but a...)

Here I also have in mind the policy of the Religion Moderator (yes, we're in "News/Activism"), which strikes me as unusually strict for our times on a forum for adults--though maybe in a refreshing way:

Any Religion Forum post which contains potty language - or references to potty language - will be pulled as soon as I see it. If you are new to the Religion Forum and wonder where your post went, it may well be that you used a word like "crap" or "BS".

All the same, I can't get too exercised about the example in the original post.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but one big reason is the "self-censoring" on the sign. I've noticed that presumably legitimate and serious news sources are spelling out certain words nowadays. The level of profanity seems to have gone up even around here lately--without even hunting for examples, I've seen multiple posts where a certain word is spelled out in full.

“Is “turning a filthy phrase with the skill of a rap artist” supposed to be a good thing? “

It depends upon the culture. In the Medieval Germany of Martin Luther it was not considered out of bounds. It would be today and especially on a Religion board so I wouldn’t recommend quoting some of Luther’s pithier invectives.

You can find scatological jokes in Shakespeare. They’re easy to read past because the English phrases he employed are dated. Ben Franklin penned an essay that some find offensive today. Earthy talk was much more common in Colonial America, especially among some Scots Irish. There’s a couple of creeks in western Virginia whose original names absolutely couldn’t be posted here. It wasn’t a sign of ignorance or low breeding, it was just a different cultural climate than today.
