Seth Rogen versus Sarah Palin: Is 'American Sniper' pro-war or patriotic?
Christian Science Monitor ^ | JANUARY 20, 2015 | Peter Grier

Is “American Sniper” a hugely divisive American phenomenon?

That’s the impression you’d get from reading a lot of pundits’ just-baked hot takes about the wildly popular Clint Eastwood-directed flick.

[snip]

Mr. Moore tweeted that his uncle was killed by a sniper in World War II and that he’d been raised to believe snipers “cowards.” Mr. Rogen, fresh off the international incident created by his North Korean movie “The Interview,” opined that “American Sniper” reminded him of a fake film that’s showing near the end of the Quentin Tarantino’s World War II movie “Inglourious Basterds.” That film showed a German sniper killing Allied soldiers from a clock tower. Thus some drew the conclusion that Rogen was comparing “Sniper” to Nazi propaganda.

[snip]

On the other hand, there were reviewers who found “Sniper” a jittery and realistic depiction of the way real soldiers feel and act and react to the horrible stress of combat. Other defenders of the flick simply said it depicted an American hero and that criticism of its politics was a thinly veiled attack on Oscar-winning director Eastwood, who spoke at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

Moore’s and Rogen's comments thus sparked some predictable outrage. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted over the weekend that “Michael Moore should spend a few weeks with ISIS and Boko Haram. Then he might appreciate @AmericanSniper. I am proud of our defenders.”

Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin jumped into the fray, posting on her Facebook page a denunciation of the film’s critics.

“Hollywood leftists: while caressing shiny plastic trophies you exchange among one another while spitting on the graves of freedom fighters who allow you to do what you do, just realize the rest of America knows you’re not fit to shine Chris Kyle’s combat boots,” the post read, in part.

IMO I don’t believe it’s either after having watched it today.

It tells of a man who out of a sense of duty or anger signed up and when called upon begins to be consumed by his sense of duty, actions and “guilt over not having done enough to save more troops” [his words]. But it also shows how his wife fought for him and her efforts in helping save him and their relationship. To bring him back from “that place” where he kept going.

It speaks to the sense of duty and commitment our servicemembers have and it also shows how their service has an impact on them.

When he sees his brother on the flightline in Iraq was a poignant moment. His “shell shocked” brother is barely recognizable as the man shown earlier in the movie and Chris’ reaction to it is telling...it shows in a brief moment how the war changes people.

No, the movie is about a man who does his duty to the best of his ability but also struggles to cope with loss, guilt and eventually some kind of recovery from his own personal nightmares and demons.

Another thing it shows is the abject evil that consumes jihadists in fighting the infidel...

Had I taken my give a damn pills this AM, I would check out Moore’s claim regarding the uncle killed by a sniper. If true, the poor man gave his lif for so little when it comes to Mikey.

Yep, and remember they promised the report on Bergdahl "right after the election"? Well here we are at almost February now, 3 months after the election and nobody is saying squat about Bergdahl. Why? Because the guy is a punk ass defector. His own unit heard him on the radio asking for directions to the Taliban. So that's 5 separate acts of Treason for Obama, one for each of the 5 Taliban commanders he released. Actually make that 6 acts of Treason being that he is now covering for a defector.

What's the penalty for even ONE act of Treason that our Congress is choosing to ignore? Oh that's right.....DEATH.

18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.
