Police created 'dangerous crossfire' in pursuing Boston bombers: report

BOSTON (Reuters) - Law enforcement created "dangerous crossfire situations" while trying to apprehend the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombings, according to a state report on the emergency response that was released on Friday.

Police officers lacked "weapons discipline" during a gun battle with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, who was killed a short time later, in the early hours of April 19, 2013, the report found.

While the first officers in the Watertown gun-battle used their weapons appropriately, others later improperly self-deployed to the scene without assignments, the report said.

"Additional officers arriving on scene near the conclusion of the firefight fired weapons toward the vicinity of the suspects, without necessarily having identified and lined up their target or appropriately aimed their weapons," the report said.

Similar mistakes were made in the effort to arrest Tsarnaev after a 911 call reported him in the boat. In trying to capture Tsarnaev, an officer fired his weapon without authority, "causing many officers to fire at the boat in the belief that they were being shot at by the suspect," the report said.

If the boat owner didn't find the punk in the boat, we in Mass. probably would've been in lockdown until the corpse started to rot.

Which, coincidentally is the key scene in hundreds of action movies.

If I could be honest, I’ve never seen anything like that hysterical response. One can just imagine what would occur if a real big event occurred.

They got to play dress-up and Army for a day. Most Police cannot even protect
themselves from each other. Imagine our police trying to disarm Americans.

I’m amazed that there wasn’t more collateral damage from that mess.

This is why I have always agreed with the almighty Col. Jeff Cooper - the deadliest weapon the police should be trusted with is a lever action .30-30 rifle.

Giving an M4 carbine to someone who is a cross between Barney Fife and Rambo is a disaster scenario.

I can understand them being keyed up and on alert, but the response was way over the top. They must have known early on these were a couple of violent losers with chicken cooker bombs. Very deadly device, but should of told them immediately they were not dealing with some big time financially supported terrorists with a grand plan.

IIRC about 1000 police officers were in the final pursuit chasing the brothers from Cambridge to Watertown into the night. What could go wrong? Think of the Keystone Cops cubed.

How did the Joker after running over his brother, Speedbump, get away? Well the cops must have figured out he didn't go far. They never said if they found the car that night. But, they continued their search through the night. The next day they told 1,000,000 Greater Boston residents living in 100 square miles to quarter in place! All the while they were searching an area about one-half mile in diameter, much less than one percent of the locked down area. They had helicopters continuously circling the search area until early afternoon.

A few hours after they relaxed the hunt and lifted the lock-down, I heard between 50 to 100 rounds fired from multiple weapons. The hunt was over. Speedbump was dead. Joker was wounded. One mass transit cop (what's he doing in this hunt) was seriously wounded from friendly fire (that's what they call it). The most amazing thing was All Watertown residents and dogs were spared. Keep in mind there were bullet holes in wood framed buildings. The SWAT team frog marched a lot of residents out of their homes. Most amazingly, there is no outcry here around Boston.

That was my impression then and now.
Police reaction was over the top ... they came away from this incident as nervous and undisciplined.

It was a tough and sad situation for the families in the Boston area. Glad the police caught the murderers. End of story.

IIRC, the main LIVE THREAD of that day/evening had references to Keystone Kops as various reports were made.

Many of us were watching online via local TV streaming.

The Kops had, supposedly, already searched the general area where the boat and culprit were later discovered.

The jury should be shown file video tapes of Tsarnavs Mommy Dearest giving interviews shortly after his arrest. What a peach she was, gloating and rationizing all the bloodshed by the crimes of her “good boys”.

Momma’s generally always side with their offspring.

Big question should be why are very questionable individuals being allowed into our country?

Is it to pass more laws which will be directed at the rest of us for our own safety?
