Sea Shepherd to Pay Millions to Whale Killers
Yahoo! News ^ | June 9, 2015 | Taylor Hill

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society agreed to pay $2.55 million to Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research on Monday as part of a settlement to resolve a long-standing legal battle over the anti-whaling group’s tactics against Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic.

The settlement came the same day the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Sea Shepherd’s appeal of a federal court’s finding that the group was in contempt of a court order to stay clear of Japanese whaling ships.

The activist group’s tactics at sea include throwing smoke bombs at Japanese whaling ships and using metal-reinforced ropes to damage propellers and rudders. The question is whether those tactics—which typically take place in international waters—amount to piracy, and whether a U.S. court can order those activities to be stopped if they take place outside its jurisdiction.

Sea Shepherd believes it can’t, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court upheld that it can. Now, thanks to the settlement, Sea Shepherd will be giving millions of dollars to an organization it has tirelessly battled against in a fight to save the whales.

You are so braindead you don’t even see the inherent conflict of your statement.

It was. They were working to repair some engine fault when the whaler bore up on it. There was apparently some desperate attempt to get it moving when it was obvious that the Japanese had turned into them but it was too late.

Somewhat reminiscent of the IJN Amagiri going after PT-109. I notice that the Japan fans out there leave out the very obvious rudder inputs by the Japanese vessel: it turned very sharply to hit the Ady Gill.

Apparently, when the Japanese illegally hunt whales and then deliberately strike another vessel that isn't piracy.

I've seen dogs...that would blow your mind at how intelligent they are.

I've seen horses...that would also blow your mind at how smart they are.

I've seen some pigs that would blow you mind at how smart they were.

I knew of a donkey that was smarter than hell.......

So your Whales are more intelligent than almost any other animal. falls short.

So how do you come this conclusion?

You are a chick, right?

Yea. In the mind of someone refighting WW2, thinking animals are people , supporting terrorists and open lying as free speech, I could see where one more fantasy has room to grow.

Tyhe fact that you are outnumbers and repeatedly refuted with fact, not fantasy seems to elude you. G with it. We need the lols.

I have never cared whether I was outnumbered. Usually means I'm thinking for myself.

I suspect you're one of those folks that gets all teary-eyed on Veteran's Day - but your type is also the first in line to tell us all to forget about the costs. The arrogance of Japan cost us a lot of good people.

I won't forget them.

I have been lucky enough to have encountered whales up close on a number of occasions and have affection for them.

So you admit that our emotions are choking off your ability to reason. That's helpful.

Every farmer has affection for their animals. Go to a 4H show sometime and look at the love between the kids and the animals they groom and show. This affection, however, does not choke off their brains. (How does it feel to be less emotionally and intellectually mature than a sixth grader?) The animals will become food, and more often than not, the folks who love the animal will do the slaughtering, as has been done for thousands of years.

Yes, of course, you got to see a whale up close, so you're now a magical being, and far more enlightened that the hundreds of millions of other humans who have loved, and then eaten, their animals. We're proud of you, and can only hope that you get elected Global Emperor soon, to save us all from ourselves and our foolish opinions and cultural norms. But since you're clearly a lying, hypocritical moron, who feels instead of thinks, thankfully your opinions won't sway many. I'm fully for the Japanese whaling, and I hope they take the ones that you've encountered up close as soon as possible... and send you photographs to prove it.

(And yes, it is ridiculous that they have to lie about the "research" thing, but that is entirely due to nincompoops like yourself who have made a myriad of idiotic rules that forces them to make such statements so that they can continue to pursue their livelihoods and help feed their people in the ways that they have done for hundreds of years. This does not give you an actual valid debate point. It is simply a reality that further shows what a pain-in-the-tail obstruction to real life that people like you have become.)

Ah, "people like me". You have absolutely no idea who I am or what I have contributed to our country, so my opinion means nothing. Not wholly surprising but disappointing. I keep hoping for some small particle of actual rationality but all I have run into so far are the "I don't like the hippies so I'm for the Japanese" types. Sadly, you seem to be another. Sometimes conservatism stands for protecting things for our future, not just killing everything off as fast as possible for fun and profit.

Whales are extremely intelligent and at one point the "hundreds of years of tradition" nearly killed them off. After a long and difficult period, we have international conventions to protect them - except for the well-heeled Japanese who just ignore the laws and kill them anyway with, as you noted, using specious signs saying that it's "Research", as if anyone needs to kill 1,000 Minke whales per year for research. But you don't mind the lying.

I am not a bleeding heart. When my country needed me, I did my share and more to fight and kill those I had to. At some point you gain a greater appreciation for what life and death really mean and particularly as you get older, life becomes something you take more seriously.

It's a shame I can't take you sailing and show you what whales and porpoises are like. They are clearly several steps above any other animal form and deserve protection.

The Japanese are energetically killing whales and porpoises and hunting Bluefin Tuna almost to extinction. Should this type of worldwide campaign at the expense of the rest of the world be allowed to go on, just because they have the money and the influence? You don't really believe that, do you?

No, I think that the Japanese are one big eating machine - and they’re killing off as much as they can for fun and profit.

Conservatism is all about conserving. Protecting our values, our way of life our future. People who willfully squander the treasures we have now for a short-term gain are completely opposite from conservative values.

The Japanese are raiding an Antarctic sanctuary and killing thousands of protected creatures just take the short-term value of their meat. Worse, they make a pretense of conducting “research” when it’s really only about making money and screw the potential damage to the future.

As a conservative, I against this false practice. The only ridiculous part is that a band of ragged hippies are the only ones standing up to them. They are, in effect, defending conservative values. They aren’t advancing socialism, they aren’t acting for one world government - they are only trying to stop a relentless killing apparatus that is open violation of the protective measures in place.

I admire that spirit. We need that kind of spirit here. We talk a good game but we aren’t standing up against the offshoring of American jobs. We aren’t standing up against the secret trade negotiations designed to eliminate our national authority. We aren’t standing up against executive actions that violate our constitution. We just sit and gripe and watch the world fall down around us.

The Sea Shepherds aren’t good looking or even very bright but they’re doing something all by themselves against the world and they’re right. I just wish all had that spirit right here at home.

Liberalism is such an insidious disease that it infects people unaware. Starting out as an itchy rash that gets exposed from time to time they pay no bother to it as everything else seems to be fine.

Left untreated it spreads and if allowed to go unabated it will turn gangrenous.
