Sea Shepherd to Pay Millions to Whale Killers
Yahoo! News ^ | June 9, 2015 | Taylor Hill

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society agreed to pay $2.55 million to Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research on Monday as part of a settlement to resolve a long-standing legal battle over the anti-whaling group’s tactics against Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic.

The settlement came the same day the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Sea Shepherd’s appeal of a federal court’s finding that the group was in contempt of a court order to stay clear of Japanese whaling ships.

The activist group’s tactics at sea include throwing smoke bombs at Japanese whaling ships and using metal-reinforced ropes to damage propellers and rudders. The question is whether those tactics—which typically take place in international waters—amount to piracy, and whether a U.S. court can order those activities to be stopped if they take place outside its jurisdiction.

Sea Shepherd believes it can’t, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court upheld that it can. Now, thanks to the settlement, Sea Shepherd will be giving millions of dollars to an organization it has tirelessly battled against in a fight to save the whales.

Japanese Whalers don’t just Hunt Whales, they kill them in a Tortuous Inhumane Manner. The Hunting methods have been modernized, but the Animals still endure a drawn out Painful Death that never seems to come up in Polite Conversation. After all, they’re just Animals.

Completely unnecessary in today’s World, but we still have Poachers Killing Rhinos to make the Chinese happy thinking they will get a better Erection ingesting powdered Rhino Horn.

Let’s not forget that they also have to Poach those Elephants so they can have a really cool Ivory Letter Openers. Nothing like having priorities.

I know this is going against the Grain here, but this whole Whaling thing is long on tradition and short on sense. We’re not talking about Eskimos taking a Whale to feed their Village, we’re talking Factory Processing these Animals despite the Inhuman Harvesting Methods.

Not arguing the obviously Popular FR view on this subject, just expressing a differing Opinion.

I wanted to let you know that there is at least ONE other FReeper who understands and agrees with your viewpoint.

Here’s hoping we won’t be banished to the Cornfield. LOL

"The Japanese even used tsunami relief funds to rebuild their whaling fleet and when an international court ordered them to stop whaling, they went right back at it."

Not surprising considering the history of japanese illegal fishing.

Thats the problem with being a terrorist backer. Sometimes you do it alone.

I stand behind every word I’ve said - and I have no doubt at all that real conservatives recognize the importance of protecting our oceans from poachers.

An island nation turned to the sea for sustenance. They harvest sea cows just as you eat land cows.

The Japanese have some ugly cultural characteristics that need to be addressed. I have tried to do that through the discussion so far but I have been accused of re-fighting WW II.

Except that we have finally discovered that the "cows" are far more intelligent than we knew. We at long last drew up laws regulating the destruction of them to allow them to try to rebuild their numbers.

The Japanese ignored/circumvented/violated those laws and go right on killing them, even though they aren't starving.

The Japanese have a troubling quality to them of violating laws when they feel like it.

Yeah, sure: if the Sea Shepherds had Soros money, they’d have friggin’ destroyers! Would love to see how the Japanese “Research” ships would deal with that!

Aw, Norm -

When you push killing, what differentiates you from real terrorists?

The hippies don't kill anyone. They bump boats, they try to foul propellers, and they mostly seem to try to kill themselves out in those little rubber boats in the freezing Antarctic seas.

Only you seem to be in favor of killing.

Of course I am in favor of killing terrorists. Aren’t you? Or do you prefer terror?

Sure. Real terrorists, like ISIS, al Qaeda, etc., etc.

Not plump hippies trying to stop Japanese law breakers.

You really need to study more. Especially if you decide that you’re ready to go fight terrorists.

I know what real terror is. It’s piracy. stringing wire across dirt roads, spiking trees to kill lumberjacks. Burning buildings. Burning vehicles. All to fulfill a political goal. And you support terrorists. You are as bad as they are. We condemn ISIS financial and verbal backers. You are no different.

Normie, you need to calm down. Back away from the coffee pot!

The Sea Shepherds aren't Attila the Hun; they have two or three slow and maintenance-nightmare ships and they occasionally prevent a whale or two from being cruelly killed by the pinhead lawbreaking Japanese.

They aren't al Qaeda, they aren't Green Peace, they aren't even the Sierra Club.

If you seriously, honestly want to fight and defeat real terrorism, join the Marines. I did and fought real honest-to-gosh terrorists and survived.

You do your part, OK? And meanwhile, get a grip.
