Sea Shepherd to Pay Millions to Whale Killers
Yahoo! News ^ | June 9, 2015 | Taylor Hill

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society agreed to pay $2.55 million to Japan's Institute of Cetacean Research on Monday as part of a settlement to resolve a long-standing legal battle over the anti-whaling group’s tactics against Japanese whaling ships in the Antarctic.

The settlement came the same day the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear Sea Shepherd’s appeal of a federal court’s finding that the group was in contempt of a court order to stay clear of Japanese whaling ships.

The activist group’s tactics at sea include throwing smoke bombs at Japanese whaling ships and using metal-reinforced ropes to damage propellers and rudders. The question is whether those tactics—which typically take place in international waters—amount to piracy, and whether a U.S. court can order those activities to be stopped if they take place outside its jurisdiction.

Sea Shepherd believes it can’t, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court upheld that it can. Now, thanks to the settlement, Sea Shepherd will be giving millions of dollars to an organization it has tirelessly battled against in a fight to save the whales.

You picked the Japanese video version - look at the video shot by the Sea Shepherd. The Shonan Maru 2 clearly turned into them and deliberately rammed - while hosing everybody with water cannons.

The Japanese haven't changed much. Same modus operandi as the 1940s. You guys are defending the same folks who brought us the Pearl Harbor, the Bataan Death March, all those murdered POWs, etc., etc.

Seems to me you have some interest in pushing propaganda videos. Are you a Japanese citizen?

Then the Japanese should close, board and seize the Sea Shepherd and any other ships used by that group.

A 3" naval gun will serve nicely from a standoff distance of a few miles. Then the Japs won't have to handle the dirty hippies!

As long as the Japanese don't threaten a whale species with extinction, what's wrong with hunting whales?

Do whales merit some kind of exception because they're large, or cute, or something?

There are lots of mammals which man hunts. Why shouldn't whales be among them?

I don't get it...

Lessee: you send me a cobbled together pro-Japanese propaganda video and now you’re complaining because I ask?

You don’t get it on purpose. Whales are more intelligent than almost any other animal. They should be protected and allegedly are by international law.

The Japanese choose to lie about their purposes and ignore the laws. They pay big money to lawyers and go right on turning thinking, feeling creatures into Japanese poop.

I prefer the whales over the Japanese. I had cousins who were prisoners for three years at Santo Tomas in Manila. They survived but many didn’t.

Whales never starved people to death or shot them for trying to scrounge food for others.

No, I sent you video with factual information and real interviews with the Ady Gil's Captain. Sorry if it makes the sea hippies look bad. To bad old Pete tells the truth. Do you have a video from a third party that actually witnessed the collision? I thought not.

That video was cobbled together from separate snippets completely separate from their original context. The Japanese propagandists that put that together also added all of the notes and text.

Are they paying you?

No, the Japanese are paying me.

First you don’t like the uncut version. Then you don’t like the one were Pete admits they accelerated. Do you have a version that does fit your constructed meme?

Are the Sea Hippies paying you?

It’s not actually an international treaty. It’s an agreement within a voluntary organization (International Whaling Commission) kind of like G7 and Japan has been threatening to leave the organization for years. And the court ruling only bans them from antarctic whaling.

Whales are more intelligent than almost any other animal.

I have no idea whether that is true, but I'm not sure it's a valid criteria either.

Look, whales are magnificent creatures. 1 whale also provides a lot of meat.

Whales never starved people to death or shot them for trying to scrounge food for others.

Neither has any other animal.

Let's just acknowledge that you have a "soft spot" for whales, and leave it at that.

Like Teddy Roosevelt and others, people can be conservationists and also avid hunters at the same time. I don't see any contradiction there.

But if a whale stood between me and starvation for my family, I'd kill and eat it in a heartbeat.

If people had to hunt for their own meat, instead of having others doing the dirty work for them, there would be a lot less consumption of meat in this world.

LOL! You 've made that pretty clear. Donate some more to that pirate and help him pay off the judgement. :)

Why is it that you feel sinking a ship filled with ecoterrorists is bad? Japan should be upheld as a model for what to do when dealing with liberals doing what liberals do.

Nothing you said changes the fact...F A C T...that the Greenie speedboat went to full power just prior to impact. The turbulence is as clear as day in the water. That means you lied through your teeth about it being dead in the water. That you lied on behalf of a terrorist organization pretty much shows you to be one of them in spirit if not in substance.

You realize that most of the WW2 Japanese are dead right? You realize that by your logic, we here owe black people reperations for America’s actions of the past right?

Every stated position you have taken here is one of extreme liberalism. Every one.

Thank you for the reasonable response. I do hunt but I don't like the idea of killing a highly intelligent creature. I used to sail a lot and I'd encounter whales one-on-one sometimes and they were absolutely amazing.

Neither we nor the Japanese are starving. The Japanese have made it a point to kill as many whales as they can get away with and they don't need the meat - they are even operating at a loss to prove a point. They kill and eat porpoises (as in the Cove) and they are causing the near extinction of Bluefin Tuna worldwide to satisfy their hunger for sushi.

The Japanese are exerting raw power to get what they want and if the only thing standing in their way is a misbegotten, shaggy bunch of hippies, then I'm all for them.
