Businessman Donald Trump surged into the lead for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, with almost twice the support of his closest rival, just as he ignited a new controversy after making disparaging remarks about Sen. John McCains Vietnam War service, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those comments. Telephone interviewing for the poll began Thursday, and most calls were completed before the news about the remarks was widely reported.
Although the sample size for the final day was small, the decline was statistically significant. Still, it is difficult to predict what could happen to Trumps support in the coming days and weeks as the controversy plays out.

Yes, those three are running. But their cumulative percentage is only 7%. I’m not giving up; but I’ve seen this story before.
Over the years I’ve voted for various conservatives including people such as Patrick Buchanan, Alan Keyes, Rick Santorum, and Tom Hoefling. Tilting at windmills, I guess. But I don’t see the McCains and Romneys as being any better for me and my views. At least I intend to go down fighting. I would rather tilt at windmills than sell my soul. If my guys lose, I’ll still be part of the conservative anchor that tries to keep the liberal ship from sailing away without any resistance. If my role in the future is simply to be no more than a voice in the wilderness, so be it.
You have an interest in having the border secured. If we don’t do that we won’t have a country left to argue over.
The Fox poll a few days ago asked people for their second choices, to see where people would go if different candidates dropped out. Surprisingly Trump’s supporters split proportionally across the board, with Jeb and Walker getting the biggest slices. I don’t get how someone could go from Trump to Jeb, but that seems to be the case.
He doesn't care. John McCain is all about John McCain.
Stop and think about how long he has been the "go to guy" whenever there is something that makes headlines about the military. The press has long treated him like some sort of military expert and I don't think it is too difficult to imagine one or more reasons why. Someone once mused that a POW was far more to the (post-1960's) media's liking than, say, some soldier or Marine from flyover country who saved his buddies the hard way. They don't like to make heroes out of certain members of the military. Whether that is true or not, McCain somehow just keeps on getting breaks from the media and assorted elites that no other "Republican" enjoys.
As for getting us into conflicts, John McCain seems to have a sense that the US military is his own personal plaything, or at least is his to rent out to his "friend(s)" du jour. Whether it is members of the military or civilian security staff at - just for the sake of argument - some Mideastern embassy, John has a history of being perfectly willing to put them in harm's way; I doubt he's doing it "gratis."

That trump would risk it all to try to fix this country means a lot. he didn't need to do this nor anything as he could have moved away to some island. what have you accomplished?
Business men are the ones who built this country, who built this civilization. Trump is a businessman . who is he ruining against, politicians and lawyers.. to me politicians are the 2nd lowest vermin in the world, next lawyers. News Media reporters are the lowest of the low vermin.
I am a businessman. We built this country and keep it running. My heros have always been businessmen Ford, Edison, Jeff Bezoz Mark Cuban, etc.
Faux News is in the tank for Jebbie and when he epically fails they will default to Mitt Walker. Oh Happy Day. We will get Hillary for President.
You better pray Trump wins the nomination.
Deeds, not words. I'll stick with Cruz.
So you admit that Trump killed of Cruz?
Yep. Provisional ballots or whatever you call them. I have NO doubt illegals will be bussed to the polls by the Dem machine. After all, why else to you think 0dingo’s been importing them by the millions for the past 6 years? He will stop at nothing to keep a Dem in the WH to keep all of his crimes covered-up. If not, he will stay in the WH and refuse to leave.
So you admit you are nuts. :-)
At the end of the day I won't vote for a liberal, a liar, and a reality TV idiot.
if you don’t vote for one of the two nominees, you are politically irrelevant in the presidential election. Not voting is to not do your duty as an upright citizen
At the end of the day you will sit home drinking a Red Bull and playing Mario Brothers. :-)
He will not adequately represent far right social issues. Others may pay lip service to those same issues, but will not do anything about the issues when in office. Hearts and minds of the general public needs to be changed to get social issues changed, IMO. .
+100
By the way, Trump will not be in the general election.
Do they still have Mario Brothers? I don’t play video games, and Red Bull is disgusting. Sorry, I am an adult. I don’t watch reality TV.
Jebbie expects to be there to pick up the pieces and then hand them to HRC, his close friend. But she won’t let him run for VP on a “fusion ticket.”
You nailed it: John McPain is all about John McPain, and AZ is all about AZ, correction AZ is all about John McPain too!
