“We live in what I would consider a relatively safe area not far from Houston but our family members all decided we would only buy gas in the early morning hours after daybreak. Even though I have a CCL, my unaccompanied nighttime driving is over unless it’s a real emergency. Have always gone wherever I wanted whenever I wanted and really resent having to worry about such issues.”

I was driving several times a year from Florida to Houston.

Well you certainly don’t have a choice except to make your driving days really short or stop for gas after dark. We used to drive everywhere in the U.S. straight through with nary a thought. No more and now we have to give a lot of thought to where we will stop for the night, particularly when driving west from Houston on the way to Arizona. Bad enough to get old without finding our freedom to safely do as we wish when we wish has also been taken from us.
