but its far more likely he will fade long before the primary season does.I keep hearing *this* assertion, time and again. What proof is proffered to buttress this assertion? I've seen none at this point...

Mainstream media is still on the narrative that Trump will soon drop from the race (or out of contention) and that we will go back to our usual business of nominating a safe, non-offensive candidate for the GOP nomination.
Usually that GOP nominee will get crushed by the "younger, hipper" Democrat nominee but sometimes that that GOP nominee will squeak out the necessary 270 electoral vote if the Democrats put up somebody just as odious (Dukakis, Gore, Kerry, etc.).

Plus, his $119 million, and growing, war chest is far greater than those of his rivals.
This guy's an idiot. Just exactly how much more is 119M than what Trump has?

Jeb doesn’t have $119 million any more. He’s spent over $20 million of it already on consultants, hotels, travel, etc and his fundraising has collapsed.

"The rise of Donald Trump might represent some massive sea change in American politicsbut its far more likely he will fade long before the primary season does." Based on what, exactly?
The statement is oxymoronic on its face. If Trump represents a real sea change in American politics, then it's a pretty fair guess to conclude that he's not likely to fade during the primary.
The country has reached a boiling point. We're well into an existential crisis that nearly all of the pundits, talking heads, and political 'experts' are missing. It's precisely WHY Trump is resonating with such an astonishing number of voters from across the political spectrum.
The bigger story is going to be how so many in the intelligentsia and professional pondering classes missed such a cavernous historical shift.
