In 1877, Rutherford B. Hayes became the first president to make a strong case for universally available public education. Universal suffrage should rest upon universal education, he said in his inaugural address, adding that liberal and permanent provision should be made for the support of free schools. Hayes, a Republican, didnt worry that some poor kid might benefit from access to free stuff, nor did he believe that the children of wealthy elites should be excluded from the universal nature of the program. For him, education was the basis for full economic and political participation, and full participation was the basis for all prosperity. An education should be available to all regardless of anyones station.
Today, there is universal access to free, public schools across the United States for kindergarten through 12th grade. That didnt happen by presidential decree. It took populist pressure from the progressive movement, beginning in the 1890s, to make widespread access to free public schools a reality. By 1940, half of all young people were graduating from high school. As of 2013, that number is 81 percent. But that achievement is no longer enough. A college degree is the new high school diploma.
In the 1950s and 1960s, it was possible to graduate from high school and move right into a decent-paying job with good benefits. Strong unions offered apprenticeships, and a large manufacturing sector provided opportunities for those without an advanced degree. A couple with a sole breadwinner could buy a home, raise a family and send their kids to college. That was the American dream. Unfortunately, today, for too many Americans, its not a possibility.

And here’s Bernie Sander’s argument -— COMPARING THE USA WITH OTHER COUNTRIES:
In Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Mexico, public colleges and universities remain tuition-free. Theyre free throughout Germany, too, and not just for Germans or Europeans but to international citizens as well. Thats why every year, more than 4,600 students leave the United States and enroll in German universities. For a token fee of about $200 per year, an American can earn a degree in math or engineering from one of the premier universities in Europe.
In other words - State owned and operated higher education.
Bernie, Why not make taxes free for all too?
Hey Bern, I worked my way through college. Screw me paying for everyone else to go.
I think the government should pay for weddings, too.
Hey Bern—Why not require that Harvard admit any and all students that apply?
It’s only fair.
Sure... add ANOTHER four years kids can drop out of. Or get beat up for ‘acting white’
Aren’t people fleeing Irland because there is no work? My co-worker is here for that reason. Used to thrive then everything withered away but they still have the “dole” - I believe that is what they call welfare/
DO NOT WANT!!!
The left must be failing to indoctrinate everyone in K-12.
I wish that the GOP whoever the nominee is, and all Republicans, drive home the point that “Free college” or free anything provided by government, is paid for by taxpayers.
There’s no free lunch. It’s a matter of who pays for it.
Let’s talk about how tax rates in these European countries are a good bit higher than here, and that there are more taxes such as the value added tax.
If I’m not mistaken, not everyone is admitted to those institutions of higher learning in other countries. Only those who QUALIFY via testing are admitted....no?
Where in the constitution is this an enumerated power for the federal government? It’s not. Education is reserved to the states and the people.
Who the heck does he think is going to pay for it? Does he even realize where government gets its money?
"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." --James Madison
Free college for everyone.
So, is Bernie going to wave a magic wand or sprinkle pixie dust to make it happen?
Sure! Make Academics work for nothing as befits their communist ideas!
I'm in! Great idea Bernie!
Why should we even have to work? Isn’t that oppression?
Life should be free for all.
Where’s my government check???
I am in favor of just the opposite. I would strip away as many tax dollars as possible from universities until they stop being dens of communist indoctrination and Satanic teaching. Any kid who goes to a non-Christian college puts his/her soul in terrible danger. And even some Christian schools have caught the progressive, Marxist contagion.
It’ll definitely be a free-for-all, there’s no doubt about that...
Can I get a degree for just participating?
It only seems fair.
