Out of Gas: Turkey Is Losing Its Battle With Russia
Observer ^ | 12/10/15 | Micah Halpern

Posted on 12/17/2015 11:56:45 AM PST by sparklite2

Turkey relies on Russia for $20 billion of natural gas every year. If that flow is even slightly altered, even for a single day Turkey will grind to a halt. That natural gas engines Turkey's electric grid.

Gas is next. Russia will start pulling it. They have already cancelled work on the underwater gas pipeline which, together with the nuclear electric plants, would eventually make Turkey more energy independent.

Russia will get away with everything. And despite pressure that Turkey is trying to apply the real pressure will be placed by Russia on Turkey. No one is willing to step forward and help Turkey. If this continues, Russia will destroy them.

Turkey will get natural gas from Isis since they seem to have more in common with them after the last two elections than they do the western world.

I don't believe Russia can afford to not sell the gas. They are taking a beating already in the prices of Nat Gas and Oil.

In my heart, I simply do not feel all that sorry for Turkey, and if economic pressures drive the current bunch of Islamists out of office and into exile, much like what happened in Egypt, not much of anything is lost.

Question - Is the Turkish army of sufficient strength and independence to carry out this palace revolution, or will there be widespread chaos much like we now see in Syria, and to a lesser degree, in Yemen and Libya?

Leader of the minority opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli has criticized President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan’s stance on speculation that Russia may impose natural gas cuts on Turkey, declaring that the presidential palace should be heated by burning dried cow dung so that the government can share the Turkish people’s suffering.

Oh well. Russia was trying to kill ISIS, Turkey apparently wasn’t.

Since both countries are loosers, it works for me if they continue to screw with eachother. If we didn’t have a Muslim President, this whole situation would be over rather quickly.

The first thing Erdogan did was to cut down the Generals. So it may be difficult to find a secular regime like the one he replaced.

It is my understanding that, while the Turkish Military maintained a stabilizing role for many years..., Erdogan has culled the ranks of all but loyal sycophants! Quite similar to what we have seen in the USA the past 7 years??

Erdogan has alienated every ally Turkey has ever had. He threw the alliance with Israel in the toilet right after he took office, and did so over Gaza of all things. Then he alienated his NATO allies, particularly the US, by making trade deals and other diplomatic openings with Syria and Iran (so much for that now eh?). Then he got cozy with Russia and allowed Turkey to become dependent on Russian gas (oops!). And of course the EU is just thrilled with all the refugees comming through Turkey to get to Europe, most of which are going to Germany, Turkey’s closet ally in Europe. Erdogan is possibly the only national leader in the world today who is more stunningly inept at foreign policy than Obama.

Different country, same tune. When these countries find a way to get themselves off the Russian teat, good on them.

So the Russians will take a beating on the price of natural gas and petroleum products. They will make it all up on volume....

Western Europe is still buying, because, after all, where else can they go?

Incidentally, all this conflict kind of shoots the whole “global warming” meme right in the head. Warfare is notoriously bad for environmental pollution, and in ways not confined to mere “carbon release”.

Look up the battlegrounds in the wars between France and Germany, and see what the repeated destruction of the Ardennes forest had on the long-time environmental impact.

Pipelines seem almost innocuous in comparison.

I don’t sympathize with Turkey since Erdogen is in charge. He is turning it into another Islamic State.

Exactly, claims they will withhold gas sales is silly. They won't make up the total loss, but they will make up what they can.

More LNG is coming in, but still just a trickle in the increase at this time. Probably 2~3 more years for any real differences.

"Russia will get away with everything.

What ? It's their gas, but when it's Russia, they don't have the right to sell or not sell to whoever they like?

I'm missing something in this guy's reasoning. Turkey is the one shafting everyone else in NATO as well as Israel and Russia, but the problem is Russia not being a sweet little colonial style servant ?
