TAIPEI, Taiwan - Tsai Ing-wen was elected Taiwanâspresident on Saturday, becoming the first woman to win the office. Voters gave her Democratic Progressive Party, which is skeptical of closer ties with China, control of Taiwanâs legislature for the first time, giving her broad authority to enact her policies in office.
"The results today tell me the people want to see a government that is willing to listen to people, that is more transparent and accountable and a government that is more capable of leading us past our current challenges and taking care of those in need,â she said in a news conference outside her partyâs headquarters.
Her main opponent, Eric Chu of the governing party, Kuomintang, conceded just after 7 p.m. âI congratulate Chairman Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party on her victory,"he said. âThis is the choice of Taiwanâs people."
With 99 percent of the polling places reporting results, Ms. Tsai had 56 percent of the vote to Mr. Chuâs 31 percent, Taiwanâs Central Election Commission said.

Good for Taiwan.
Is she married or not?
I bet she and her family have more money than gawd—their own version of them.
This is good news how?
Voters gave her Democratic Progressive Party,
I’m awaiting to China’s reaction to this it’ll be interesting to say the least.
She’s not that hot.
Thanks for posting.
Very good news.
Good that she got a clear majority over the two communist sycophant candidates.
No one can say she won due to a split vote.
I am addicted to Asian, but Miss or Mrs Tsai Ing-wen is way too old for me.
I was merely wondering which she is.
Taipei Behavior.
She is not married.
She’s a Miss
I believe she doesn’t play ball with the “One China” nonsense.
Names don’t correlate with political positions in different countries.
Case in point: People’s Republic of “Insert Communist Country Here”.
Hot, Very Hot.
Taiwanâs Democratic Progressive Party yesterday scored a landslide victory, making Dr Tsai Ing-wen the islandâs first woman president and gaining control of the legislature for the first time.
The stunning victory gives pres elect, Tsai and her party sweeping authority to shape policies and negotiate with Beijing, which has long eyed the pro-independence DPP with suspicion.
Tsai hailed the result of freedom on Taiwan. She pledged to unite Taiwan, gain respect around the world and warned Beijing: âOur democratic system, national identity and international space will be respected.
Formosa, Republic of China has but about half the land area of Texas but an almost identical independent attitude.
Watch: Tsai Ing-Wen vows to defend Taiwanâs sovereignty. (an affirmation declaration)

Rab
Never thought I’d cheer someone who belongs to the “Democratic Progressive Party”.
If their attitude of independence mirrors that of Texas I applaud them for that alone.
Do they have nukes?
I have read that they really don’t have the ability to defend their island on their own.
But isn’t the Democratic Progressive Party a “center-left” party?
Yes and no.
This chick’s party is anti-PRC but liberal. The conservative party is (comparatively) pro-PRC.
I wouldn’t know who the hell to vote for.
It is indeed. I’m glad I don’t live in the ROC, to be given such a choice at the ballot.
