Blizzard warnings have been issued for the Baltimore and Washington D.C. metro areas, and blizzard watches extend northward to the Philadelphia and New York City metro areas as Winter Storm Jonas begins to take shape. The storm is expected to deliver heavy snowfall to at least 15 states, and heavy ice accumulations, strong winds and coastal flooding will add to the storm's impact as it carves a path from the nation's heartland through the South and onward to the East Coast now through Sunday.
As of Thursday morning, just over 73 million people â or roughly one in every four Americans â were covered by either a blizzard watch, blizzard warning, winter storm watch, winter storm warning, winter weather advisory, or freezing rain advisory from southeast Nebraska to the Carolinas to the New York City area.
Yep. I went to my store last night (in exurban Maryland) — not a lot of empty shelves. People are less panicky where I live.
Since the March organizers say it is going on as planned (unwise IMO), I hope people planning on attending the March, use good judgement and common sense. These are not conditions where people are advised to be walking around outside. The March will be taking place during the height of the storm with snowfall rates at time 2-3 inches per hour, near zero visibility, whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 60 mph. This is not a stroll through Winter Wonderland but a very dangerous and potentially life threating blizzard. Getting from and to the March by car will be near impossible and public transit will not be running.
If anything, keep the children and the elderly and people with health conditions inside and safe and warm.
...BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 3 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 6 AM EST SUNDAY...
* HAZARD TYPES...HEAVY SNOW AND WIND WITH BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW FRIDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. SLEET MAY MIX WITH THE SNOW FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY MORNING EAST OF INTERSTATE 95 BEFORE CHANGING BACK TO ALL SNOW BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE MID 20S.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A BLIZZARD WARNING MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. FALLING AND BLOWING SNOW WITH STRONG WINDS AND POOR VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY. THIS WILL LEAD TO WHITEOUT CONDITIONS...MAKING TRAVEL EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. DO NOT TRAVEL. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...HAVE A WINTER SURVIVAL KIT WITH YOU. IF YOU GET STRANDED...STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE. PREPARE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF POWER OUTAGES DURING SNOWY AND COLD CONDITIONS.
Holy moly, my daughter and her family are in Silver Spring, MD. I’m going to text her and tell her to get to the store early today and stock up.
Those folks can’t handle a few inches, so good luck to them. I hate to say it, but the Feds are probably doing the right thing by sending people home early. I’m sure not much work gets done on Friday afternoons anyway.
March for Life
Warning!
DC Metro system will be completely shutdown from 11pm Fri thru all day Sunday.
Federal government shutting down by noon today. The Fed buildings around the Mall will NOT be available for even temporary shelter. With predicted high winds and wind chill factors frostbite will be a real danger.
Ancillary services such as stores and restaurants more than likely be shutdown as well in downtown DC.
With a poor history of road clearing DC transportation will be impossible. You will be stranded with little chance for relief via emergency services.
Not a wise move by march organizers to continue.
All the way to South Carolina?! Shooooottt.
No Metro services in DC, rail and bus shutdown Fri 11pm through Sunday (late)
Haven't you heard? Gunpowder releases greenhouse gasses when it burns, so guns have to be banned too!!
The size of this one and the forecast conditions remind me of the Blizzard of 93.
I know a lot of people are poo-pooing the magnitude of this storm cause of all the media hype in the past, but this storm is really nothing to mess with.
The potential ice accumulations alone are bad enough, but additionally, nor’easter snow is notoriously wet and heavy and I hate it and cannot imagine having to deal with 18-24 inches of it drifted and packed like those winds are going to do.
More like this......
DC was crippled by 1 inch of snow Wednesday evening. This was after all local jurisdictions claimed that they were prepared for the worst.
The march ends at 3pm. That’s about when the storm is supposed too start
The metro closes 8 hours later
I think we’ll live.
With the proper preparation, which in this case means dressing in layers and staying warm, this won’t be that bad.
It’s a snowstorm folks. No volcano raining hot lava. Snow and wind.
Big deal.
Sorry, I’m from Michigan where we actually get snow on emin a while. I’m not one of those people who live in fear of the weather.
The march goes on.
Indeed. I have a snow-blower, but the time to use it is the same time we’ll have the blinding snow and wind, so I don’t know how soon I’d get out there with it.
Blizzard of ‘93. Hmmmmm. Did that hit Maryland?
Nobody treated the roads. It was hell for people to come back to work the next day, too.
I just sent this message to friends in DC and surroundings.
Dear Folks: I have just listened to DC mayor and her emergency people. They now predict 24 to 30+ inches of heavy wet snow. Axxxxx will need to shovel off about half of this from the back porch roof to keep it from pulling away like it did before with similar circumstances. By this time I hope you have food, blankets, flashlights. Also have 2 gallons of water per person for 3 days. Winds of 50 mph are predicted. Power outages likely. City says they have 8 emergency shelters but I didn’t see them at Google. Don’t waste your salt, stores are running low. Sprinkle some this afternoon for people rushing home. Then, only after digging snow. People are urged to be home by 3 pm and stay there. Axxxxx may want to go out and earn some money digging out cars or setting up appointments for digging sidewalks tomorrow. Cheers???
[Anyone leaving town after 3 pm may experience very, very long delays getting out of town. Hope you have plenty of food and water and blankets. Most DC drivers are from the south and have little experience with snow driving.]
Don’t let the asshats get you down.
Hey, maybe we can do something like the religion forum, say, a prepper forum where anti-prepper posts are disallowed!
Here in E.TN we shoveled the drive off and ran errands yesterday. Overnight another inch covered over the nice clear driveway. It’s steep so I won’t be driving for the next few days. Reports says this breaks early Sunday.
“Srsly? Theyâre naming snow storms now?”
Part of government brainwashing to assure we all find all weather to be “extreme”.
They don’t name thunderstorms yet, but they almost always come with hysterical warnings of wind, rain, and deadly lightning.
