Remember the case in Texas, where a twenty-something man was in the hospital “brain dead” and his mother and doctors wanted to pull the plug?

The father got a gun and holed up in his son’s hospital room.

The young man recovered!

Chop shop “doctors.”

Many?I know firefighter’s and this has never happened.

Did you ever consider that the firefighters you know just haven't told you about it... These are not pleasant memories and I have told very few people about these experiences myself. The first time I saw this happen was shortly after I was hired many many years ago. We showed up at a dump truck vs. a bicyclist.

The bicyclist was laying face down in the drainage ditch next to the road. The police had thrown a blanket over him and said he was dead. Only he wasn't dead... yet. Unfortunately, his face was in the water; he still had a pulse but he was not breathing. We tried all the way to the hospital to revive him. He didn't die from his injuries... he had drowned. Maybe he would have died anyway and this was the kindest way for him to go...

This is not actually the worst story I could have told you. Some of them are recent enough that I could still get in trouble for mentioning them in public. You see there is this thing called HIPPA... we are not allowed to tell people these stories. the story I told you came from an ERA before HIPPA. We can be prosecuted for disclosing details about the calls that we are on. That is why I seldom give any information about some of the horrible medical calls I have been on. And believe me you don't want to know...

I am glad that this never happens in your world... because these are the type of things that I saw which eventually resulted in my retirement. I loved helping people, but I worked in a town with a lot of problems, the crime capital of our state actually. I didn't go off on a disability and I do miss my crews and a lot of the good things that we did for people that often went way beyond what anyone would expect. I am proud of those things, but I have a lot of terrible memories also and even writing this reply has got my heart rate up and I am feeling shaky. After 25 years I knew that I had seen and done all that I could with the fire service.

I don’t think that process is all that fast or there would never be any transplants. There have probably been some horrible mistakes which thank God was averted in the above story but for most people dead is dead. In the interest of full disclosure i am on a waiting list for a kidney. If i thought living people like in the above story were being harvested i’d chose death.

When we pray for military personnel, we also pray for police and emergency people too. You all do great things and deal with terrible things; thank you for all that you did.

It's on YouTube, but I didn't link it because of language.

There's also a Monty Python organ donor skit on YouTube, that I didn't link because it is so gruesome.

Reluctant organ donor: "(My organ donor card) says, 'in the event of death'!"

Organ collector: "No one who has ever had their liver taken out by us has survived."

Not so funny when it almost actually happens. Someone better review the protocol for defining brain death that was used here.

I notice when I read an article or hear something on the news about someone being in an accident and in critical condition, I just know that the next day they will be declared “dead” so their organs can be harvested. They don’t even try to save the patient. It seems these people are declared “brain-dead” within 24 hours of the accident.

I’m not sure what you’re talking about. Jeb and his brother both did everything they could short of armed conflict to try to keep her alive, and Jeb even went as far as to urge the prosecutor to re-open the investigation into her original injuries to focus on the low-life husband. That Jeb ultimately had to give in to the corrupt judge was forced by the reality of the situation, which was that no court in Florida or in Washington gave a damn about Terri Schiavo.

Thank you for very much for your prayers. Our minister until a couple years ago was a retired Navy Chaplin and he included military service members and fire and police in many of the prayers that he led during services. My wife and I always appreciated this. I was well compensated for my work in the fire service and it was very rewarding in many ways.

I think that Fatima misunderstood my post. I said that I responded to “many” calls with the police where they had reported that someone was dead. Then I said that on “several” occasions the person was not actually dead. Over 25 years I went to thousands of calls with the police the vast majority of the time when they said someone was dead they were. But on a few occasions they still were alive; that is why it was my department’s protocol to confirm the police’s determination. The police have very limited emergency medical training where I worked and there are some that have a cavalier attitude.

This is why embalming became required for burials. Nobody waking up in a coffin and dying after days of terror.

the media likes to sensationalize, but I’ll bet the drs thru testing thought this girl was brain dead, and were going to let her die a natural death without ventilation, etc....

There are several versions on YT (none with video, it seems), but this is the one I listened to to confirm my memory:

Its almost 3 am here and i just did home dialysis. In 2 hrs i do another round. Then off to work. What you said probably requires all that time to explore and i’m not going to try any harder than this one post.
The whole thing about brain dead is above my pay grade. If they breathe then they’re alive. If they stop they die. Someone not breathing can donate, someone breathing should never be harvested. I can’t take a simpler stance. Someone wanting to donate organs may be called foolish or stupid by some here, i call them hero.

I had similar sentiments to you going into the primaries and was going to make a point about it. In fact I did in at least one post. However, I was reading Michael Schiavo’s account of the story, and he blamed Jeb Bush for his many efforts to stop what happened. It has made me rethink this incident.

At the time I did feel that Jeb wimped out, but in reading more details I realize now that Jeb did try very hard to intervene.

To expect him to do more than he did would require, in fairness, to expect all of the governors and judges and legislators to disregard laws and court rulings and take the law into their own hands when it comes to abortion.

Now, maybe that is what SHOULD be done. But it is not what we have been demanding of our leaders.

Regardless, Bush is out now. And I think most of us here agree it is for the better.

The poor girl. She could probably hear them getting ready to take her organs.

they execute prisoners in communist china in order to get access to their organs for rich chinese commies in need of donor organs.

the same communist china that Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama have made our major trading partner.

the same communist china that builds your iPhones.

the same communist china that is sending H1B visa scientists/engineers over here to conduct industrial espionage on behalf of their home industries, while middle aged american scientists/engineers are layed off because they “cost too much” and left under/unemployed for the rest of their lives.
