GOP Rep. Says Haggling Proves Lying Is Part of Middle Eastern Culture[2013]

Rep. Duncan Hunter, Jr. (R-CA) appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal Wednesday morning and expressed some stark “generalizations” about Middle Easterners in reference to the United States’ negotiations with Iran over that country’s nuclear development. People in that part of the world always want to “get the best deal possible no matter what it takes,” he said, and “that includes lying.”

They have been lying rug merchants for thousands of years, and lying is a way of life for them. Fact.

Haggling is like bartering.

It doesn’t involve lying. It involves negotiating for a better price, a better deal.

Of the dozen or so people I know that have spent time in the middle east, soldiers and business people, every single one has noted that dishonesty is simply part of the culture.

People who lie when they don’t have to are pretty low in my estimation. And, as you say, it’s a way of life.

It doesn’t involve lying.

With people from that part of the world it often does. Like the rug merchants who are perpetually going out of business, or the electronics guys selling regular phones as "satellite phones".

I’ll grant you that people lie.

I’ve bartered or haggled over price, but didn’t have to lie at all. I explained what I was willing to pay. They countered. Sometimes I walked away. They generally came running to do the deal.

This is a respected way to do business in some cultures, and I never saw it as lying or anything other than two people coming to an agreement.

Haggling Proves Lying Is Part of Middle Eastern Culture

I worked with an immigrant from Iran who commented on how she had been told there was no haggling when buying things in America but was surprised that when buying cars in America you are supposed to haggle.

Earlier in the interview, Hunter argued against sending ground troops into Iran and said he instead favored the use of "tactical nuclear devices" in order to "set them back a decade or two or three."

Duck and cover.

Telling the Truth is revolutionary-—it is only a part of the Judeo-Christian ethic. It is why Christian culture, when dominating the West, flourished and could create the philosophy of the US Constitution.

Satanism, paganism, humanism (New Age), islam, Marxism, Socialism are all based on the Big Lies....and are all irrational and contradictory and incompatible with the American Justice System which is based on Truth and Justice.

Duncan Hunter is dead-on. In most of the Middle Eastern cultures “saving face” for yourself and for those you are dealing with is most important. If they have to avoid stating the truth to avoid embarrassing themselves or a superior, they will create a new truth (lie).

Of course it is. That’s why muzzies and rats get along so well. The ability to lie convincingly and constantly is a litmus test requirement for the rat establishment voters.
