Washington could become the first state in the nation to impose a direct tax on carbon emissions from fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline and natural gas.

A ballot measure before the state Legislature would create a carbon tax of $25 per metric ton of fossil fuel emissions burned in Washington, while reducing taxes. ...

One step closer to taxing the air we breathe.

Its a leftist, progressive, proto-fascist slush fund for government and its cronies employees, and hangers-on. That’s all.

carbon emission tax?

excellent!

let’s put meters on all politicians and demand they pay the tax, due on the spot, after every 10 minutes.

Obamacare already taxes you for your body, so air is just an afterthought.

Can I ask a stupid question??

Why do we set out to tax certain things, based on what someone thinks is a good thing for society?

Liberals seem to want to do this a lot. But conservatives have their issues with taxing certain things, tax breaks for other activities deemed good for society.

What I’m trying to say is, what about if we had some tax codes which had the goal of raising revenue to pay for the essential functions of government, but did not set out to punish certain things or reward others?

For example, this carbon tax wants to punish carbon output.

Cigarette taxes theoretically are to discourage smoking, and in some places, are used for health programs.

Various business tax breaks will encourage investment in certain geographic areas or certain lines of business.

Various deductions and exemptions related to home ownership are to encourage home ownership as good for society.

Off topic, but what if instead of doing the global warming taxes, which come on top of so many other taxes deemed to push one activity or another, let’s rebuild the tax code to collect only what is necessary, and not be set up to encourage or discourage anything???

SOMETHING is driving the price of gasoline in California...it is dollar above the national average, not even including the annual summer increase (another 30 cents) hitting this weekend.

So who is getting that extra dollar? Three years ago they blamed it on a refinery fire - markets adjust...other refineries pick up the demand, refineries get repaired (and in much less time than 3 years). How come NO DROP IN PRICE?

But no ones asks those questions...I suspect that California’s ‘carbon tax’ may have a lot to do with it.

One last note - a $1.00 increase in the price gives the government $15 Billion in hard money to play with - note how there’s no talk about the state going broke.

(sorry for going off-topic a bit, but this is really annoying me)

OK!! Everybody pay attention!

Lesson for today:

1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.

2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.

3. The earth is one of the sun’s planets.

4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.

5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.

Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?

Carbon tax, $15 min wage ... At what point will Bboeing pack up? ... Will we see the billboard "Will the last person leaving Seattle, turn out the lights" like we saw in the 70s?

Somebody needs to tell Boing about all the SAC airbases that the progressives have closed over the past 20 years that are located in business friendly states and are primed for development.

I’ve heard too, that the California global warming gasoline tax is based on some fluctuating calculation. It’s been hard for anyone to get documentation on how that tax is calculated, or how much per gallon we are paying in global warming tax.

The best estimate I heard is that it started at about 25 cents a gallon in late 2014, and has increased about another 25 cents since then. But nobody knows for sure, because it’s not a per gallon tax of a set amount.

Another little know fact is that California charges sales tax on top of the retail price of gas. Most states do not do this. So at $3.00 per gallon, about 25 cents would be sales tax, which is not listed on the pump, and doesn’t show up in any internet searches if you try to find out how much in taxes Californians pay for gasoline.

"Obamacare already taxes you for your body"

Never thought of it that way.

It is a head tax for just being alive. And it supports abortion by making children to expensive for certain people.

Thanks, I knew about the sales tax (used to live there). It has always kept the price of gas there a bit higher. I suspect the sales tax is also on top of the carbon tax, since the sales tax is added at the pump...so it is a big factor.

I sure would be interesting if that media that all the Anti-Trump people are so protective of would take a look into why the price is so high there...but then why should they - after all they seemed to have sneaked in a HUGE Middle Class Tax Increase, and no one even knows it.

That’s what we thought last time ... if they manage it, then the Seattle area will see a mass exodus of those wacko libs and the berg might be worth living near again - even the state as there will be virtually no major sources of revenue left - having killed off most of the Timber and Commercial fishing industries already.

$25 per metric ton of fossil fuel emissions

So is $25/ton emission just for CO2 or for the water emitted also? If both I estimated it to be about 30¢ per gallon. To bad the authors couldn't be clear about the tax on the source side rather than the emmission side. I wonder why they want to bury it.
