That was my favorite mag when I was a kid. That and Motocross Action followed by Dirt Bike.
That is bad news ...one of the best magazines ever ...
I still have every single issue throughout he 80’s
I used to buy an issue off the newsstand every now and then.
It was certainly interesting.
Gee I miss the Reagan years.
I was a subscriber back in the 80s...drew some funny looks at school!
I wonder if their past issues have ever been digitized? They should be...there was probably plenty of BS (or at least “enhancement”) in stories, but there was plenty of good material (historic and humerous) there too. One of the funniest stories I read back in the day was a “history” of American rations, particularly centered on C-rats from Vietnam.
I used to read the magazine back when I was in the army. I especially liked the equipment reviews.
Ping
A magazine that always stands up for police professionals.
I remember reading the magazine in the 80s when i was single and lived in a high rise in Chicago. It was an escape for me into a world that really appealed to me. Sad to hear of its demise.
People laughed, but they had good and current Intel on those pages.
Well, damn. Gonna have to make a particular point of grabbing a copy or two of that final issue. I think there was some value in having a physical magazine. Digital is going to be hard to carry to the port-a-potty out in the field, and even harder to read when the juice is out.
Anybody remember the “Special Forces Underground” and the “Resister”?
OK this is maybe the place for this question.
Who was the toughest?
When I was a kid we often argued over whether Tarzan could whip Bomba or if Roy Rogers Could beat Gene Autry.
In combat arms there are two men who really stand out. Between Fairbairne and Skorzeny, who would win with no weapons? Who would win with bayonets? Who would win with rifles?
I know we are no longer little kids but maybe we can have some fun like we did back then.
I intend it as a serious question.
That, comic books and gas station playboys were staples of my youth.
Never bought a SoF but always spent time with one whenever I was in a magazine store when I was a kid.
Vividly recall seeing split skulls in an article about being a merc in Zimbabwe.
I used to read it. At one time it was a pretty good magazine with a lot of military history and weapon reviews.
They published two of my articles about my over the fence trips into Burma in 84,85 and 86 to report on the dozen or so hill tribes fighting a guerrilla war against Rangoon.
I photographed and wrote about the soldiers of the Karen, Karenni, Mon, Pao, Shan, Wa, Arakhan,Kachin and even a Muslim group all, fighting a guerrilla war of survival against the brutal Ne Win dictatorship in Rangoon.
It was a great adventure until I caught a drug resistant strain of Malaria and barely made it out of there alive.
