Academics at the University of Oregon have determined that glaciers and the science that studies them are deeply sexist.
Merging feminist postcolonial science studies and feminist political ecology, the feminist glaciology framework generates robust analysis of gender, power, and epistemologies in dynamic social-ecological systems, thereby leading to more just and equitable science and human-ice interactions, reads the papers abstract. The research was published in the peer-reviewed journal Progress in Human Geography in January.
The study, by historian Dr. Mark Carey and some student researchers, was financially supported by taxpayer dollars. The National Science Foundation (NSF) gave Carey a five-year grant which he used to write his feminist glaciology paper. Carey has received $709,125 in grants from the NSF, according to his curriculum vitae.
Most existing glaciological research and hence discourse and discussions about cryospheric change stems from information produced by men, about men, with manly characteristics, and within masculinist discourses, Carey wrote. These characteristics apply to scientific disciplines beyond glaciology; there is an explicit need to uncover the role of women in the history of science and technology, while also exposing processes for excluding women from science and technology.
Carey concluded glacier research is intertwined with gender relations, masculine culture, geopolitics, institutional power and racism these apparently led to to glacier-related academic and governmental jobs being predominantly filled by men. Damages from melting glaciers target women and ethnic minorities, who are more vulnerable to glacier changes and hazards than are men, according to Carey.
The study shocked many academics and real scientists, and several initially believed the study was a work of satire.
Who knew there was such a thing as feminist glaciology?'Robert Bryce, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, told The Daily Caller News Foundation. I cant satirize it. The scientists do that in their own abstract.
Cornell University chemist Dr. Phil Mason, took to Twitter Sunday to say the paper left himdumbfounded.
Carey attempted to link flooding from a glacial lake with an increase of sexually transmitted infections in women. The academic and his colleagues said the paper showed how mens voices have dominated the research and complained that power and colonialism have shaped the science when discussing the research on the university website. The scientists blame the era of Victorian Imperialism for the lack of female glaciologists.
Do we really need a study to tell us that glacier nerds are more likely to be men than women, Marlo Lewis, an analyst at the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute, told TheDCNF Or that women in developing countries are more confined to their homes and child rearing when sudden glacier melt causes local flooding?
Carey also helped found the University of Oregons Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples Initiative.
Predictably, the authors fail to see the sexist nature of todays climate agenda, which seeks to restrict peoples access to the most affordable, abundant, and reliable forms of energy, Lewis said. Energy poverty is literally lethal, and in energy-poor countries, it is women and children who suffer most.
Carey did not respond to requests for comment.
Mark or Drew?
I can picture the scene when the old hippies at the table made the decision to fund this.....”Hee Hee this will blow the wingnuts’ heads off their necks!”
[Ive read and reread the article. It HAS!!! to be satire. Yeah, I know they claim its authenticated and all that. But humans simply cannot believe such a load of malarkey. Not even hardcore libs/leftists.....can they?]
What if I told you the story of an amazing guy, whose parents were inspired by Selma, Alabama, in March of 1965 to produce a baby which would be born about a little less than 4 years earlier (plus gestation time), who could not scoop ice cream, who signed his Selective Service registration card the day AFTER it was postmarked, who had a birth certificate number lower than twins born the day after him, who openly re-used another candidate’s recorded words and who promised to raise energy prices, skyrocketing, on his very voters?
What if I told you there were tens of millions of people who put such a man into the most powerful office on Earth, not just once but twice? Would you believe that has to satire? Or is it all too real?
You would think that would be the last grant he ever got. That’s what you’d think.
I love gobbledegook. I read it all the time in “job ads”.
Every cliche was has been beaten to death. All jammed in there by some twenty-something HR person. Over and over again.
I’d run the list but it’s just too painful to repeat.
My guess is, he’s on his way to an appointment should Comrade Bernie or Bathroom Email Server Benghazi Hillary win.
This is so...STUPID.
I used to agonize over what to put on my resume. Then I just started essentially cutting and pasting my job description. Much easier.
$709,000 of our tax money for icebergs is a lot of “cold, hard” cash
Why didn’t I think of that scam?
Now THAT’S some dedicated study of the sexist glacier!!!
Needless to say, the states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to tax and spend for such a study. So the House appropriations bills that helped to raise the revenue for this study were unconstitutional.
And the corrupt, post-17th Amendment ratification Senate was wrong to help the House pass such bills. And whatever low-information president signed the bills in question was not doing his job to protect and defend the Constitution.
Remember in November !
When patriots elect Trump, Cruz, or whatever conservative they elect, they need to also elect a new, state sovereignty-respecting Congress that will not only work within its constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers to support the new president, but also protect the states from unconstitutional federal government overreach.
This includes killing appropriations bills that the House cannot justify under Congresss constitutional Article I, Section 8-limited powers.
Also, consider that such a Congress would probably be willing to fire state sovereignty-ignoring activist justices.
Wait until they start studying the gay glaciers.
Oh man, there goes another $709,000!!!
“Academics at the University of Oregon have determined that glaciers and the science that studies them are deeply sexist.”
Time to make them out as being nuts but for that kinda
dough they went in whole hogg.
Receding Swiss glaciers incoveniently reveal 4000 year old forests and make it clear that glacier retreat is nothing new
Reading that made my head hurt.
Shouldn’t they be using the money to study why our academics are wasting taxpayers money on useless studies?
After millions and millions of government grants the highly anticipated results of their studies are in:
1. Water is wet.
2. Sh*t smells.
3. Roses are red.
4. Violets are blue.
