NY State nears political deal to saw the bottom rung off the economic ladder

New York State appears ready to throw as many as 200,000 people out of work by imposing a $15 an hour minimum wage statewide.

The New York Post reports:

Republican Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan is close to a “Faustian pact’’ with Democratic Gov. Cuomo to raise the state’s minimum wage to a national high of $15 an hour — boosting union power and possibly costing New York hundreds of thousands of jobs.

A source close to Flanagan said the deal would involve Cuomo agreeing to do “little if anything’’ to help Senate Democrats, now just one vote shy of a majority, win the upcoming special election to replace former Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Nassau), who was ousted in December after being convicted on corruption charges.

Despite strong opposition from upstate business groups, the Farm Bureau, and not-for-profit organizations — as well as his own deputy Senate leader and state GOP Chairman Ed Cox — Flanagan has signaled he is ready “to cut a deal on the $15 minimum with Cuomo, likely for a longer phase-in time so that he can claim the Legislature will revisit the issue down the road,’’ said the source.

Consider that, if this report is true, Democrats are willing to sacrifice control of a legislative body in pursuit of this goal. It is a strategic goal, intended to win a longer battle. Progressives are rigidly determined to eliminate the possibility of people without educational credentials and social advantages to climb the ladder of economic success. Their chosen instrument is a high minimum wage that prevents employers from hiring people without the ability to generate value in excess of the wage.

Of course it does.

Ya gotta look into the weeds. Many union contracts call for the starting union wages for some jobs to be a certain number of dollars above the minimum wage. So raising the minimum wage automatically bumps up union salaries across the board..

You were doing well until the Jew Hate poured out.

It’s all about the endgame, in which “progressives” live luxurious lifestyles and everyone else has to struggle to survive.

Another result of raising the minimum wage is to increase SS contributions (for both employer & employee), along with other payroll taxes. It is basically squeezing more entitlements from employers.

Indeed. I am in a position to see what it costs to hire an employee vs. what the employee is actually paid. The discrepancy is huge. A $1.00 increase in wage costs around a $1.50 increase in employer expenses.

When employers hire illegals under the table, they save a lot more than the price of the minimum wage.

I think there should not be a mandated minimum wage. The market will set its own minimum wage if let alone.

$15 an hour minimum wage just part of the grand socialist plan when will the CEO and the custodian make the same wage?.

Despite strong opposition from (...) and not-for-profit organizations

What's their beef? So they still don't make a profit. Even better, a big deficit. They should be happy!

I didn’t even think about union contracts. I guess it is true for both public and private union contracts.
