Is Capitalism or Socialism More Conducive to Christian Virtue?
The Lanier Theological Library in Houston, TX ^ | September 6, 2013 | Justice Antonin Scalia

Posted on 03/19/2016 12:56:25 PM PDT by patlin

Many years back, Justice Scalia was asked to give a lecture at the Jesuit School of Theology in Rome and the topic he was asked to address was, "Is the political philosophy of the left or of the right more compatible with the public good."

This topic should be of utmost importance to Christians, for by showing kindness and mercy to the less fortunate, not by coercion, but by our sense of morality & duty to God through the faith of Christ that is in us, these acts of kindness and mercy are steps in the process of sanctification that must be walked. Does not the very act of a socialist government, therefore, remove a most important step in that sanctification?

And so if this is important to Christianity, how much more so to Judaism?

Justice Scalia altered that lecture he gave to fit today's narrative of the direction in which our nation is going. This is a rather short lecture, full of the wisdom & wit Scalia was known for, you will not be disappointed.

It stymies the mind that the 2 largest religions of the world, whose very foundation depends upon sanctification as a key element of salvation, then how is it that the majority of Catholics & Jews overwhelmingly vote for socialism at the ballot box each election cycle?

They seem to believe charity is ok as long as someone else is forced to do the giving.

I do not know that happened but the title to this thread was supposed to read “Deprivation of Sanctification through Socialism”

Can you fix this for me?

I’m sorry, am I correct in reading this as saying that good works are necessary for salvation? I thought that had been proven to be bad theology some centuries ago.

I was hoping for a thoughtful response after you having actually listened to the lecture.

NO, that is not what this is saying. Jesus said, by their fruits you shall know them. Fruits are our works, they do not save, they are the evidence that we have received His grace and are now seeking to do that which Jesus taught, as well as Paul, to imitate Christ, to follow in His footsteps.

Best point is his comparision of capitalism and morality, which seems to mirror John Adams thoughts on the founding document: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Capitalism, when practiced in a moral and ethical environment, performs a superior social good v. socialism.

History is littered with failed socialist Christian societies.

They fail because there is inequality that always raises it’s head.

Capitalism is morality neutral, socialism is always evil.

I would add that Scalia’s thoughts, as well as Adam's mirror that of God. Jesus said...

Mat 26:11 For you always have the poor with you,...

...was a reminder of what is written in the Pentateuch, that God set aside instructions on how we, as individuals are to take care of the poor. It was the priests who were given the task to take care of the widows & orphans, the needy were to be taken care of by the individuals who best could take care of them on a personal level, thus teaching that it is always better to give than to receive, it is always better to put another before ourselves.

This reminds me of an excellent article by Selwyn Duke, entitled “Was Jesus a Liberal.”
