In the previously unseen footage, Kim Philby gives a seminar to East German spies A previously unseen video of one of Britain's most infamous spies describing his career as a Soviet agent has been uncovered by the BBC.

The tape is of Kim Philby giving a secret lecture to the Stasi, the East German Intelligence Service, in 1981.

It is the first time the ex-MI6 officer can be seen talking about his life as a spy from his recruitment to his escape.

He describes his career rising up the ranks of MI6 whilst providing its secrets to the Soviet Union's KGB.

He ends with advice to the East German spies.

I'm not a Brit but I've gotten the sense that Kim Philby is to the leftists in Britain what Alger Hiss was to the leftists in the USA. That is they are angry to this day that he was caught and they periodically will jump up about how he was railroaded and all that.

I suppose video of him teaching spycraft to the communists ought to make it hard to defend. But they probably will because they are leftists and truth means nothing.

This is incorrect. He was a Soviet double agent, not a British double agent.

Pity he died just before The Fall.

"...after all our work does imply getting dirty hands from time to time but we do it for a cause that is not dirty in any way," Philby explains.

I'm hearing this argument a lot in politics these days. It isn't really much more than "the end justifies the means," as if that never works the other way.

Cambridge educated, part of the old boy network. British authorities were warned years before he went over to the Soviet Union that he was a commie, but did nothing. He had a history of communist activity at Cambridge in his early years, and his first wife was a hardline communist activist but that wasn’t enough to raise any flags.

It’s like saying it’s OK to murder 20 million people as long as it’s for a good cause.

Like what the Bolsheviks did to Russion Christians pre-WW2: murdered 20 million of them.

And I will point out that most of the members of the "Cambridge Five" were homosexuals.

So was Alger Hiss.

Philby was nothing compared to Roger Hollis. The head of MI5 from 1956-1965, he was a GRU mole.

Some of the bureaucratic bumbling in many of the spy stories I’ve read is beyond belief. Ames, Hansen, Philby, Fuchs . . .incredible how these bastards got away with it for so long

Sounds a bit like the current POTUS.

Personally, I don't believe in bureaucratic bumbling. Bumbling is always a cover story for deliberate action.

Always.

That is what they are saying: his career as a Soviet agent.

I think the rosenbergs would be a better example of psychosis, on Greenglass’ deathbed, he confessed, both julius and ethel were spies as well as he

A hero to our President, no doubt.

He and Philby might even have, um, quaffed at the same spigot, or of the same family plumbing, at least.
