A survey has found that tens of thousands of voters, including Demi Moore and other celebrities, have mistakenly registered as members of a conservative minor political party in California in a mix-up over its name, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Los Angeles Times said that a telephone survey of 500 members of the American Independent Party found nearly 3 of 4 people did not realize they had enrolled in a political party that opposes abortion rights and same sex marriage and calls for building a fence along the U.S. border.
The newspaper said voters were confused by the use of the word "independent" in the party's name. In California, voters who do not want to register with any party must check a box on a registration form for "no party preference."
"I just blew it," Deborah Silva, 64, of Point Arena in Mendocino County, told the Times. "There were a number of choices. I just checked the box that said 'independent.'"
Of people surveyed in the Times poll, fewer than 4 percent could correctly identify their own registration as a member of the American Independent Party.

Do independents in California get to vote in party primaries? In Ohio, if you aren’t registered in a party you can only get the non-partisan ballot on primary day which will have things like school levies or in Boehner’s district the special election to replace him (but not the candidate selection for the November general elections).
Some of this screw up can be put at the feet of the State when they use strange terms. For instance, in some states they use the term “unenrolled” to mean unaffiliated. Now to me “unenrolled” sounds like you are removing yourself from the registered voter rolls, but it means not-enrolled in a any particular political party. And yes, there is also the “independent” checkbox option which registers one in the Independent Party.

Uh no, I refer to "artists" and other Kalifornians who think the rest of us should be informed by their policy insights, but can't master voter registration. I haven't seen the form in question, but I based my assumptions about its difficulty on two things: First, I've never seen one that was especially confusing. Second, if Kalifornia were going to design the forms to trick people, it would be to register for the most radical leftist moonbat libtard party possible, so the deficiency must therefore lie with the registrants and not the form.
