Target says transgender people can use bathroom that aligns with their identity

Target Corp. made it clear that transgender people in its stores are welcome to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity.

The statement Tuesday by the Minneapolis-based retailer comes amid debates in many state legislatures over restricting public restroom use to the sex listed on a person’s birth certificate.

While many of those conversations have centered around restrooms in public schools and government buildings, Target appears to be one of the first big-box retailers to take a proactive stance in declaring its position on the matter when it comes to its own restrooms.

While they may not be technically public, restrooms in stores are often the most easily accessible and widely available options outside of people’s homes and workplaces.

Target’s position also extends to its fitting rooms.

“Inclusivity is a core belief at Target,” the company said in a statement on its corporate website. “It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.”

Molly Snyder, a Target spokeswoman, said it is not a new policy, but the retailer wanted to clarify its position given the questions it has received from both customers and employees amid the national debate. Executives sent e-mail to store leaders earlier this week to convey the message.

“It’s a restatement of a policy,” she said. “It’s just us being very overt in stating it.”

The full Press Release from Target:

Continuing to Stand for Inclusivity

Recent debate around proposed laws in several states has reignited a national conversation around inclusivity. So earlier this week, we reiterated with our team members where Target stands and how our beliefs are brought to life in how we serve our guests.

Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.

We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.

In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.

We regularly assess issues and consider many factors such as impact to our business, guests and team members. Given the specific questions these legislative proposals raised about how we manage our fitting rooms and restrooms, we felt it was important to state our position.

Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target.

A close friend of mine who was sexually assaulted has a much different take on this, the words they used to describe this are not fit to be typed here.

Ironically some SJW’s on Social Media claim this will make them feel safer. Key word is “feel.”

My wife says she will never shop there again. Don’t have to worry about internet shopping bathrooms.

It’s simple...no trans-whatever will use my restroom at home, so I’ll just shop on line.

The town where we used to shop has become so ghetto, and violent, we do go there after dark anyway.

Target already is in big trouble. Last year they closed ALL of their Canadian stores. Their US stores are barely even making it. Ever since their security breach back in 2013 I think, they’ve been teetering.

This will be the end.
My family is out officially after this.

"Target says they're welcome to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity."

So for transgenders, that would be a trash can.

Since I very rarely go to a Target, I’ll make it a point never to go there again.

Huh. Wait for the first Syrian who declared "female" in a Target ladies' room...until he began the rape.

Just write out a string of zeros for the lawsuit, Target.

I guess Target doesn’t believe that women deserve to be protected from biological males who use the female restrooms. Target is actually discriminating against heterosexuals. Maybe heteros should take their business elsewhere and let the rainbow gang have Target to themselves.

I shop at Goodwill. No, seriously. I shop at Goodwill. Picked off some good slacks and business-casual shirts for work.
