Hell, I was one of the attorneys purged in NM. We are required to state party preference in our Bar renewal forms every year and it’s an open secret that Republicans get extra special treatment. In my case, a client disappeared leaving no forwarding address or phone number. Her case got closed because you can’t proceed without a client. She reappeared 2 years later and I tried to reopen her case but the facts had changed. She complained to the Bar and said she had never disappeared. I provided proof she did. They set me for trial. At my trial with the Bar I asked where the client was. They said they hope I knew. She had disappeared again. I still got disbarred.
That is just sad.
Not that it would change your situation, but couldn’t an attorney just say “no preference” or something of the sort - just to be left alone? Of course, that’d preclude being active in party politics, which IMHO is a deprivation of your right to freedom of association, but at least people wouldn’t lose their ability to earn a living just because of their political preferences.
