Louisiana gov: Trump helped 'shine a spotlight' on flood recovery

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) said Sunday that Donald Trump has helped draw attention to recovery efforts after the recent devastating floods in his state.

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," the governor downplayed critical remarks he made before the Republican presidential nominee visited his state.

"I didn't dismiss his trip as a photo-op. Before he came down, I said we welcome him here, we want him to be helpful," Edwards said. "And we hope that it doesn't turn into a mere photo-op."

Edwards said Trump's visit to the state was positive for Louisiana.

"Because it helped to shine a spotlight on Louisiana and on the dire situation that we have here, that it was helpful," he said.

"I also appreciated the good phone call, the conversation that I had with Gov. [Mike] Pence [R-Ind.], who was sincere and genuine when he called, and we spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful," he said about Trump's running mate.

A bit of a surprise. Maybe fear or respect that Trump in a fell swoop (literally) may have become more popular.

When Obama arrives, expect the Gov. to go pit bull on Trump. Cuz, y’know, there’s the one face. And then there’s the other.

The acting president’s visit to Louisiana was great for the state.

Well, you’ve got to give credit where credit is due. Gov. Edwards put his state before politics. Good for him.

I agree. There were no politics in Governor Edwards’ comments.

Obama, copying Trump’s move.

Real leaders are pro-active, not reactive. People are seeing the difference in the two men via their actions, and it’s not pretty for Bammy.

Meanwhile AWOL Hillary continues her medical treatments, and can only watch from the sidelines ...

Wonder if Obama will cancel. I say it’s 50-50. He doesn’t need the governor for anything.

Bell boy probably knows that 3/4 of the state’s residents are with Trump on this matter.

I’m glad it drew more attention to their plight.

The Governor's claim doesn't hold water. Obama couldn't get to New Jersey fast enough when there was political gains to be had from a tour foo the affected areas.

In fact, if anything, the Louisiana Governor is politicizing the disaster by making excuses for Obama's callousness towards the people of his state.

And if you think this ticked Obama off, Hillary's head must be spinning...or maybe she's short circuiting.

I'm betting she doesn't go down.

This dip-shit governor told Trump to stay away as he did not want to be disrupted.

Democrat governor, quickly back-pedaling. Opportunist Bel Edwards. Trump is THE MAN!

Gov Edwards must have felt a little voter and citizens wrath after his original comments. So now he’s switching gears. Does he mean it? Who knows and who cares. Trump brought the spotlight with his visit among other good things. Only far left DemRat hacks would spin it.

I hear this refrain constantly but am divided here. Personally, I’m for just ignoring the leftists when they do something “right.” Yes I know, this will not be appreciated.

Bull. He told Trump to stay home. This guy flipped AFTER Trump’s visit.

Obama is still leading from behind.

Now if someone had explained to Obama that a flood is like an unexpected water hazard suddenly appearing next to a golf green, he would have been down there with clubs in hand.
