Guns are tax-free in Mississippi this weekend

It's the Magnolia State's fourth Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday. It's the busiest weekend for businesses like Philadelphia Gun and Pawn.

"It has been [in past years] so busy that we feel like we lost sales because we couldn't wait on everybody," says manager Richard Ray.

In addition to items being tax-free, specials are being run to help buyers save even more.

"If you spend a $1,000 you're already going to save $70. And everybody gets a chance to get a break on the taxes, which everybody needs to save money, and I can understand why," says Ray.

Philadelphia Gun and Pawn will have a list of items that are tax-free when you walk in the door.

We are finding a lot to like about Mississippi. Our daughter has been at college there for a couple weeks now. A lot of really nice, sensible people there. Hail State!

My roots are deep there. Ancestors settled in what became Jones and Jasper counties in the 1830s. Huge extended family still there. Wife and I plan to retire there. There is no place like home.

Apparently it is Louisiana too.....from Fox Business:

Mississippi and Louisiana will host “Second Amendment Weekend” sales tax holidays over the next two weeks. Mississippi Opens a New Window. will exclude purchases of firearms, ammunition and hunting gear from the state’s 7% sales tax from Aug. 26-28. Louisiana’s Opens a New Window. 5% sales tax won’t be imposed on non-commercial firearms purchases from Sept. 2-4.

Yes and you can also read about how many Americans are against guns. Reading the polls one could conclude gun businesses are going out of business as well as gunsmiths and in a few years as guns wear out or need parts or work, there simply won't be any around. That is . . . if one believes the polls.

The problem is you have to have a Mississippi license to buy a handgun. You can buy a long gun using any state’s license.

If I really wanted to save money on sales tax, I’d go to Anchorage. But our sales tax in Wasilla is two percent, and it’s capped at $10. So if I buy a $1000 gun, my sales tax is $10. If I buy a $50,000 truck, I’ll pay $10 in sales tax. But if I drive 50 miles to Anchorage, I can save myself $10.
