Two pillars of local journalism are facing cuts.
Sources confirm a Crain's Detroit business report that indicates the entire editorial staff at the Detroit News has been offered buyouts -- regardless of seniority.
They have a week to decide before layoffs are announced.
Sources tell 7 Action News staffers at the Detroit Free Press will be made a similar offer as early as Wednesday.
Tim Kiska is a former staffer for both papers.
"This is not good, I don't think, for public discourse at all. This is a disaster," Kiska said.

What a panty wetter!
Excellent!
These media people take themselves WAY to seriously...
The only thing I want to know is when does this happen to the NY Slimes and the Washington Compost?
When will Lee Publishing shrink?
Mitch “The Bitch” Albom needs to get run out on a rail.
What a white tool playing nice with inner city black ignance for ratings and book sales.
FUMA
Well, both papers are a joke, anyway.
When the wikileaks dumps were coming in hot & heavy, I recall seeing ONE reference in the Detroit News — ostensibly the ‘more conservative’ of the two. It detailed how Debbie Dingell had been omitted from some Dem party function to her everlasting outrage.
Anything about Hillary? The Clinton Foundation? Naw, but Debbie Dingell sure got the shaft...
Sheesh...
(In the interest of full disclosure, I only would look at the online version of the News, almost never the Free Press, so I probably missed many hard-hitting disclosures of the criminality that our watchdogs were hawking...)
Or not...
Pillars of salt.....
“Watchdog role” ???????
A propaganda machine for the DNC and every liberal piece of garbage that comes down the road is more like it.
Social fascists don’t die well, takes time. But when they do die, they morph into something else to look good for the masses. Then there gone......
The Clintons are trying to pull this off as we speak. Will have to die with the thought that there kid will do it, because they failed and blamed every one else, to justify their status as corrupt loser’s.
Newspapers come and newspapers go. The void they leave will be filled in a nanosecond.
Ahem, I would bet this paper endorsed Hillary.
Enjoy your future, idiots!
What watchdog role?
I did continue to peruse their online site almost exclusively for local Detroit sports news until they came out endorsing some third party person instead of Trump.
Once again I voted against the establishment Detroit paper by moving my once a day sports hit to Mlive.com. They do sports a little differently but it's good, and Mlive gives a much more State of Michigan approach to the news.
A huge difference is they don't really do any editorials, they just report.
I won't miss the Detnews & Freep.com at all.
It’s called capitalism journo babies, deal with it. Or start writing truthfull stories about Trump and conservatives and maybe people will read your rags.
Yeah, me too—once in a while I’ll buy the Free Press or the News if they have a frontpage story about some Detroit property deal or some urban-renewal related thing, but those rags are worthless—even the Sports sections I should add—but I’m from Chicago.
Honestly, I haven’t seen a copy of the News or Free Press in at last a year. Newspapers are not relevant to the world of 2016.
