Great news, but in French elections, a plurality in the first round doesn't win the Presidency. In the second round, Left-wing parties no doubt Sarkozy, who will probably win on account of the coalition.

The consolation is that Sarkozy is probably one of the more sensible politicians in France outside of FN on immigration (unlike establishmentarians like Merkel in Germany and elsewhere in Europe, Sarkozy has acknowledged that African and Arab immigration to his country is a problem), and that he will have no choice but to give FN's views a hearing if he loses by a narrow margin.

“If he loses by a narrow margin” should be “If he wins by a narrow margin”

I read that the leftists were flooding for Juppe, who it sounds like is definitely to the left of of Fillion, who is probably to the left of Sarko. Juppe seems as bad as Chirac.

My sense is the feeling was Sarko couldn’t beat Juppe so a lot of people who may have gone for him moved to Fillion instead.
