I remember watching a high school production of Les Miserables, with an Asian kid cast in the lead role. And the guy did a good job, and I understand that it’s just a high school performance, and I had no desire to deny the Asian kids in the school the chance to star on the stage if they so desired, and all that . . . but I must admit, it really did take me out of the story.

I strongly dislike the idea of casting real, historical characters as anything other than what they actually were. Alexander Hamilton was a white man, and he should be portrayed by no one else except for white men. Likewise, Martin Luther King was a black man, and he should be portrayed by no one else except for black men. And so on.

In China ( Shanghi and Hong Kong especially, pre the handover ) Chinese children spoke English with a British accent and yes, were taught Shakespeare and Milton, Donne, Tennyson, etc. to boot.

Re African, black and Boer children speak English with a Brit accent...WHERE? Most assuredly NOT in RSA, Zimbabe, Liberia, nor in Kenya. And Egypt is also in Africa and Egyptians of all races don't speak English with a Brit accent either.
