Trump to meet with Petraeus, Romney as secretary of state battle heats up
The Washington Post ^ | 11/28/16 | Jerry Markon and Paul Kane

"Others inside Trump’s orbit, particularly Vice President-elect Mike Pence, are viewed as Romney supporters, believing that he has a steady hand that would benefit Trump in the turbulent world of diplomacy, according to people familiar with the dispute who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Romney’s supporters have largely counseled Trump privately, while his opponents — Conway, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and a handful of other Trump loyalists — have gone public in recent days to stoke a revolt."

As you may know the “top secret information” was his private appointment calendar. While it may be best to keep secret who he was scheduled to meet a few years in the past, it’s not exactly weapon specifications.
On the other hand, he’s a grown up and should know and follow the rules.

Romney is the embodiment of the establishment we voted to get rid of and that Trump ran against.

“Isn’t Petraeus the one that divulged classified information to his girlfriend or am I thinking of someone else?”

Yes, that's the one. I do not want this guy to be Secretary of State. What he pulled with classified info and humiliating his wife was too recent for him to be considered for this position. Appearance matters a great deal with Secretary of State. I know I am in the very small minority of freepers in asserting this, but I believe Romney would be a great pick for Secretary of State. By choosing him, Trump would shore-up the Establishment wing of the party. I just don't believe that Romney would waste his energy plotting against Trump. I think he'd want to be a great Secretary of State, which would mean being loyal to the President he serves.

“Then he isn’t really different than Hillary when it comes to safeguarding classified information.”

Agree. And it was just a few years ago, not when he was some neophyte, early in his career.

Pence was a great choice for VP. Trump obviously has a great deal of respect for his opinions, and will make a choice that is in the best interest of the country - whatever the ramifications are with his supporters. Trump recognizes he has a big job and many qualified people who can serve the country, and if he decides to go with Romney (while Romney would need to apologize and recognize that whatever Trump’s history - he is clearly working to build a world-class team that will implement Trump’s policies (and make clear he will support those policies).

Time to move forward - whether Romney, Giuliani, Petraeus, or whoever. Objective is to get moving and put the election behind us. If someone is unfaithful to the President - Trump can always fire him/her.

“I predict Romney as SOS. This will send conservatives into paroxysms of rage and shut up critics on the left”.

Because we all know Leftist elected him. The Dumb ass move of the new century, screw your friends, reward your enemies.

“I predict Romney as SOS. This will send conservatives into paroxysms of rage and shut up critics on the left. Trade one enemy for another. Trump is his own man playing his own game.”

I think you’re correct, and I believe Trump is letting the conservatives get their feelings for Romney out of their systems now, rather than after he chooses Romney.

I'm not a fan of Romney, but I don't agree with you on that. Romney's political career has consisted of a single term as governor of Massachusetts and two failed presidential bids. His resume as a businessman is far more extensive than his limited political pedigree.

I don't see him as part of "the establishment" at all, though his political moves over the last 10+ years would disqualify him from serving in my administration if I was the one making the decisions.

Petraeus shouldn’t even be eligible. He is no longer able to hold a Security Clearance because of his conviction. He cannot function effectively as SecState without a clearance.

Unless the old adage of "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" is on Trump's mind....Mitt Romney should NOT be rewarded for his, albeit uncharacteristic, over the top vile diatribe against Trump....as before but not now, Romney cannot be trusted, he is easily inveigled.

John Bolton for S.of S. comes to mind......

Naw...Rudy belongs here...perhaps Homeland Security...one of his strong points. he's a well rounded advisor...like Newt. Newt is Congressional system smart.

Look at past SOS's...Albright, Powell, Condoleeza Rice, Hillary, Kerry....They're all weak and overstep.

We need Bolton. Trump will tell him what deals to make.

If he can’t find someone suitable, just leave it blank.

“So Pence is the only name I have seen associated with supporting Romney: anyone else?”

From the article:

“Others inside Trump’s orbit, particularly Vice President-elect Mike Pence, are viewed as Romney supporters”

I don’t see anything saying that Pence supports Romney. All it says is that Pence and others “are viewed” as Romney supporters.

Who in the world views Pence as a Romney supporter? I have not heard a single person say that.

The Washington Post is making things up again.

Hard to tell - he may have been wanting to rub Mitten's nose in it w/o appearing to do so or he may have wanted to assert who would be working for who if he does find a place for Mittens.

Either way, I trust his judgement.

One of the problems Trump must be facing right now is that the reach of the political elite is so vast that finding good people who are not only up to the task, but available to leave their present positions for four years is probably very difficult.

The pool of candidates for many of these appointments are relatively narrow; and unless he goes to the private sector, almost all of them are bound to have some political baggage.

Unfortunately, politics has been pretty much dominated by professionals for so long that even competent and able people are unwilling to get involved.

I think we should trust Trump to do the best he can, with what he has to work with. Give him a little time to get a good handle on the Washington landscape.

Bolton was in favor of Iraq. Trump not so much.

That’s a very good point. Getting people out of the private sector may present even bigger challenges (like potential conflicts of interest) than “political baggage.”
