Donald Trump expected in Baton Rouge Friday

BATON ROUGE – President-elect Donald Trump is expected in Baton Rouge Friday afternoon, multiple sources told WBRZ Tuesday.

Sources spoke on condition of anonymity as the event is still being planned. Two sources with knowledge of a planned visit said staff were trying to find a venue. Before the election, Trump's schedule was regularly updated with seemingly spur-of-the-moment rallies that were heavily attended. Events are known to attract thousands of people. At a campaign event in Baton Rouge in early 2016, more than 10,000 filled the River Center. A visit Friday may require space for more than the number of people who attended the first Baton Rouge campaign stop.

Trump would likely be in Baton Rouge stumping for State Treasurer John Kennedy who is in a runoff election against Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell for David Vitter's seat in the U.S. Senate. Vitter decided not to run for re-election after losing the race for governor to John Bel Edwards.

Should Trump visit Baton Rouge Friday, it'd be his third visit in 2016. In August, Donald Trump spent a few hours touring flood-damaged areas. He held the campaign event at the River Center in February.

Hope Mr. Trump’s going to use this venue to announce some important post for Bobby Jindal. Wishful thinking maybe, but I think a man like Mr. Jindal would be a real asset to the Trump team.

“...I think a man like Mr. Jindal would be a real asset to the Trump team.”

If you lived in Louisiana for the past eight years, you would not think that and probably would not want to say that out loud.

Continuing to campaign (and get his positive message to the people) AFTER an election is unprecedented.

Trump wasn’t kidding when he mentioned Bush #3 and Hitlery had NO energy. Trump is full of energy.

What an INDUSTRIOUS soul!

Back in the 90s, the Clintons instituted the “perpetual campaign” as it is practiced today. All show, all the time.

Trump’s giving it back to them in spades!

Gosh, I don’t remember that (maybe trying not to remember bad memories) — but if you say so, then it’s not unprecedented.

Did they continue to go around and give speeches like Trump is doing?

I used the wrong term. It’s called “permanent campaign.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permanent_campaign

The Permanent Campaign is a theory of political science conceived by Patrick Caddell, then a young pollster for U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who wrote a memo on December 10, 1976 entitled “Initial Working Paper on Political Strategy”.

“Essentially,” Caddell wrote, “it is my thesis governing with public approval requires a continuing political campaign.” [1] In the case of Bill Clinton, sometimes referred to as the “permanent election”.[2]

The phrase “the permanent campaign,” its concept and history, were first defined by journalist and later Clinton presidential senior adviser Sidney Blumenthal in his 1980 book, The Permanent Campaign.[3] In it, he explained how the changes in American politics from old-style patronage and party organization to that based on the modern technology of computer driven polling and media created a fundamentally new system. He explained that political consultants had replaced the party bosses and brought with them a new model by which campaigning became the forms of governing.

Yes, he should do everything possible to elect John Kennedy as senator. We need every vote we can get in Congress!

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to visit Baton Rouge and stump on behalf of Republican candidate John N. Kennedy on Friday, a day before Louisiana voters choose their next U.S. senator.

The Secret Service notified the Louisiana State Police of Trump’s planned trip Tuesday afternoon, said Col. Mike Edmonson, the State Police superintendent, “but we have not yet received any specific details of his agenda.”

Once a venue is located and contracted, party officials and Trump’s office will make an official announcement, according to two Republican sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because plans are not yet finalized. The Advocate reached out to Trump’s transition team for comment but was given no specifics on the visit’s details.
