After long hours of heated discussion, the Canadian government has established the worlds first nationwide carbon price. Only two of Canadas ten provinces refused to sign the law, arguing that carbon pricing would lead to reduced competition between firms.
During Fridays meeting, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau presented his carbon-pricing plan to provincial representatives, aboriginal leaders, and US Vice President Joe Biden. Trudeaus decision to price carbon was likely influenced by the fear that Donald Trumps election will lead to increased carbon emissions by the US.
I understand that many of you are concerned about what the new administration will do. Whatever uncertainty exists around the near-term policy choices of the next president, I am absolutely confident the US will continue making progress in its path to a low-carbon future, said Biden as he attended the meeting in Ottawa.
Economists often tout carbon pricing, which charges based on CO2 emissions, as the most effective method to reduce global warming emissions. Canadas plan will increase the cost of producing a ton of carbon by $7.60 (the equivalent of 10 Canadian dollars) per year until 2022 when it will have reached about $38.
The price will pause for British Columbia in 2020 at just under $23.
Manitoba and Saskatchewan refused to sign the agreement. We compete with the Americans in our province for drilling rigs. Our farmers compete with their farmers. Competitiveness for Canadians matters, especially at a time when our energy sector is reeling from low commodity prices, argues Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall.
Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister hinted that he might sign the agreement in the future if his province receives more money for healthcare.
Editor's note: This is really a stupid idea, punishing businesses for being productive. Next thing you know they will be penalizing cows for farting, like California is attempting to do. There is a right way to do things, by the way, see below.
No, since much of a snowflake is made of air which includes CO2. That includes every breath exhaled by the whiny spoiled self-absorbed indoctrinated pansy snowflakes. I get your ironic point.
85% of canadia business is dependent on the USA.
I see the Canadian dollar plunging.
And BTW, since you're so close to the Artic, please let the world know if the north Pole has sunk into the sea due to lack of ice. Al Gore warned us it would be gone by this year, 2016. Your all frigging idiots and the polar ice caps have more ice than in a decade or more. Look at a friggin satellite photo. Sheesh, you can Google it!
Guess we’re going to have to build a wall along our northern border as well.
Because this scheme will collapse the Canadian economy and we just can’t handle the refugees.
CANADIANS: Nice to the point of national suicide.
And for a while it seemed like they had started to turn it around...
At the very least we would have to carefully vet them, to make sure no 'celebrities' who fled there sneak back in.
That is my measuring stick for this global warming nonsense. According to Gore's "Inconvient Truth", we were supposed to have NO ice in the north polar sea, parts of Florida would be underwater, and small islands would disappear. None has happened.
Gore now has a sequel to his bogus film debuting at the Sundance Film Festival. Robert Redford, the founder of Sundance, and other socialist celebrities are practically drooling over the screening. I wonder what new contortions (theories) Gore's film will explain that NONE of his predictions came true, if he touches on them at all.
I looked at the list of documentaries to be screened at Sundance. To my amazement, almost every one had humankind as the great evil of Earth, whether climate, species, culture, race, history, etc. Name the topic and they either blamed America or western civilization or mankind in general. I don't understand how liberals/socialists/communists get up in the morning to face such a bleak life view.
Is that for real or a photoshop?
I actually looked into that a few years ago. At the time, so many people were trying to sell carbon credits that the price was just a few bucks for the credits in an acre of forest. At $23/ton it might be worth it again.
Hah! Good one.
Welcome Formerly Canadian Businesses!
With lower taxes, less expensive regulations and a well trained, English speaking workforce; you can’t afford to not set up shop in the USA. No carbon taxes, and no more of that off-the-wall leftist crap. The warmer weather is included at no extra charge!
Wait out the grinding collapse of the Canadian economy, driven by out of touch socialist pipe-dreamers, in a convenient safe haven - while still being close enough to drive home for the holidays.
The new Trump administration can roll out the red carpet, and provide excellent concierge service to businesses looking to invest where they can succeed.
Business-friendly America opens its arms to refugee firms from around the globe - join the boom.
In Britain the courts ruled that Algore’s first film, An Inconvenient Truth, could not be shown in schools due to so many falsehoods in it. Will his new film meet the same fate? lol
AFAIK that is an un-retouched photo of Trudeau. He really looks that stupid.
The quote is real. He backpedaled on it later but only with explanations as to why he was right to begin with. To paraphrase; “We don’t want to be mean to immigrants, it might set them off.”
Perfect!
I didn’t know that about British schools. They got that one right.
OMG! That would be worse than the Mexican invasion. Have you seen the way they dress when they get to warmer climes? And all that milling about, pointing at things and incessant picture taking. {shudder} I couldn't take it.
Wow. How could he possibly backpedal, “Honor killings shouldn’t be considered barbaric”? Really? “We don’t want to be mean to immigrants, it might set them off.” How does guy have ANY type of power. Oh right, it’s Canada - the land of the cordial but stupid.
There is a very real possibility this could happen!
There’s going to be a tidal wave of Kanuckastan businesses and citizens headed over our northern border. Hope we can get them to build their own fence.
In a country where raising taxes on the middle class is suicide, how do you do it without pissing them off?
It’s not about and never was about climate change. It’s about wealth distribution - well, at least taking wealth from the rich and middle class, and finding endless ways to waste it. It would be more honest to ACTUALLY distribute it (rebates) but all government love their special PROGRAMS more.
