Portions of Highway 89 buried under 30 feet of snow near Emerald Bay

A 4-mile section of Highway 89 on either side of Emerald Bay remains closed, with some sections buried in up to 30 feet of snow, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Caltrans maintenance crews are working to clear the highway, but with more storms expected this week, the highway won’t reopen until an extended period of dry weather allows workers to safely clear the area of snow and debris, according to a Caltrans news release.

Motorists traveling between the south shore of Lake Tahoe and the north or west shore will have to use Highway 50 and Highway 28.

The National Weather Service forecasts new snowfall over the Echo and Donner passes from three storms between Wednesday and Monday.

It keeps the Californians on their side of the border, so I consider it a gift!

For fairly dry snow... 10” is average water content I think. Can be much lower for the wet snow that was the bulk of this storm... very heavy, dense snow. The worries are as much about avalanche danger as snow removal on many of these roads.

The Donner party missed making it through to California by one day. Ric Burns (Ken’s brother) did a documentary about the Donner party that I used to show my 7th graders as their Christmas movie (hey, it’s got a lot of snow). At one point a family has to leave their two children, an eight-year old girl to take care of her 2 year-old brother. They couldn’t take the kids because of the depth of the snow. The next rescue party found both kids alive and they made it out. Kids are capable of so much more than we give them credit for.

1" steel plate = 7" rust.

Snow melts.

Rust never sleeps.

Reminds me of watching a Christmas special with my niece.

One of the characters opened an envelope and said, "Oh look, the elves are inviting us to a party at Donner's house."

The other remarked dryly, "Somehow the idea of joining the Donner party does not appeal."

I did a spit take that turned into a coughing fit as I tried not to have hysterics.

She wouldn't have understood what was so funny and I was NOT going to explain.

Lake elevation is 6225.

I’m less then a mile from Emerald Bay and there is no where near 30 feet of snow. I’m very doubtful any part of 89 had 30 feet of snow on it unless there was an avalanche. We have 2.5 to 3 feet of snow on the ground.

The amount of snow on the ground is great, but nothing approaching spectacular. Much less then the last decent snow year we had which was back in 2009.

More snow predicted this week, but only a couple of feet. If we keep getting a foot or two of snow a week through April, it will end up as a good year - almost like the good old days, as they say.

From the pics on the Sac Bee it indeed was an avalanche. I was the chief engineer on the Tahoe Queen back in 1990, and even before that i worked the upper shop up the hill at Heavenly.

Of course you know the Tahoe Queen went into Emerald Bay, even in the winter when its water froze into plate ice. But they still ran the boat, saw it a hundred times at least.

My friend in Incline Village opened her front door to a wall of snow last week.

Emerald Bay from the article is only about 5600ft.

Tahoe's surface is at 6225 so I'm thinking Emerald Bay is as well.
