Here’s what your guacamole — and other groceries — would cost if we had a Mexico border tax

It was a claim that President Donald Trump repeated on the campaign trail: that he would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it. In his first few days in office, Trump appeared to make good on one portion of that promise, by signing an executive order for the planning and building of that wall to proceed.

But the cost for that wall will temporarily be borne by Americans, Trump said, and Mexico’s government insists it will not pay for the construction on the border. On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico which suggested that until Trump’s promised reimbursement from the Mexicans materializes, Americans would pay for the border wall with their pocketbooks.

The White House clarified afterwards that Trump’s suggestion was an option rather than an official proposal, but social media users quickly questioned the possible uptick in one particular grocery item: avocados, of which 80 percent come from

America’s southern neighbor. Though the price of the guacamole’s main ingredient varies from market to market, the creamy green fruit usually costs a few dollars. Assuming a $3 cost, a 20 percent tax would increase the price to $3.60.

Takis, a common packaged food snack, would go from $6 to $7.20, the Washington Post reported. Other staples like tomato paste would also see only a slight markup, from about $1.20 to $1.44.

$3.00 usually buys me a couple avocados, but if it's $3.60, so be it. Never heard of a Takis, don't eat chips, but if I did and was concerned I bet I can find American chips.

Personally am not worried at all by this. If i was I would just cut back and eat other things. Marvelous adaptability being an omnivore.

No, what happens is that you find cheaper alternatives that did not come from Mexico.

I eat about two avocados per year. I am more likely to buy one to mash up and use as a face mask than I am to eat it. Though I do like them once in a while. I’ll pay the extra 25 cents.

The Mexican consumer brands Mexicans in the US buy will go up. They will just license the brands and switch production to the US. More winning.

If the price of guacamole goes up, Trump is finished for sure.

I eat avocados rarely, don't know what Takis is, grow my own tomatoes and/or buy locally grown ones, don't mind paying more for tomato paste, don't drink beer, and on and on and on.

As far as I'm concerned, President Trump can put a 50% border tax on EVERYTHING coming in from anywhere South of this nation's border.

Funny, I don’t recall media outrage over the burdensome taxes on tobacco products, and sodas placed on consumers by government, whether state, federal, or local.

The US produces avocados. Takis is only consumed by the illegals.

This has no effect on me!

I don’t buy any produce from Mexico because they allow use of human POO for fertilizer.

Tequila is the worst tasting alcohol in the universe, and I had a high end $50 shot of it and it still tasted like crap. So I stand by this. In a margarita its acceptable.

Corona is the worst tasting beer in the universe, it requires lime to prevent the gag reflex.

There are literally a thousand American beers now thanks to the local brewing revolution, I can drink USA beer and never touch a Mexican beer again.
