Three candidates emerge to replace Flynn as national security adviser

Vice Adm. Bob Harward is one name that has come up to replace Flynn as national security adviser, and the leading candidate to get the job, a senior official told Fox News.

Harward is a U.S. Navy SEAL, but also has a previous relationship with Secretary of Defense James Mattis. Harward was the deputy commander of the U.S. Central Command under Mattis and was also the deputy commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command.

He also served on the National Security Council for President George W. Bush and commissioned the National Counter Terrorism Center.

White House sources described Harward as the “toughest guy in the SEALs” and a “real rock.”

A senior administration official added that if Howard is the choice to replace Flynn, he could be in place by the end of the week.

Lt. Gen. Joseph Keith Kellogg, Jr. has been floated as a permanent replacement for Flynn. Trump named him the acting national security adviser after Flynn resigned.

Kellogg is a decorated U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1967 to 2003. He earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” device and the Air Medal with “V” device during his time in the Vietnam War

This kind of story makes me think that Flynn (and of course Pence) both served the president poorly—including with Flynn resigning without being asked.

Good point. I don’t want a Mattis subordinate there. Actually, I don’t know why the position is needed at all. Theoretically, the Pres should be capable of getting info from the CIA, and JCS, and making up his own mind.

That said, the next person MUST be ready to do battle with the CIA and FBI, cause these are vipers’ nests.

Trump with the apt tweet this morning, I hope he succeeds in draining DC: Donald J. Trump ‏@realDonaldTrump 7m7 minutes ago The real story here is why are there so many illegal leaks coming out of Washington? Will these leaks be happening as I deal on N.Korea etc?

A cute story is that I was normally in the operations center by at least 6am. On one morning as I entered I saw the Chief of Staff that had never been in before me.

I looked at him saying “What the hell are you doing here, it is not noon yet?” Realize that I had years seniority over the Chief. He gave a priceless face and looked left, following his eyes I saw Bob Harward standing there in PT clothes.

Later while in a vehicle with Bob I apologized saying that I was just messing with the Chief. Bob said don't worry as he heard worst.

LOL, hell no I was a REMF.

However, I did have a 54 designation (Operations) and when the Screaming Eagles were tasked to provide an O5 to be the Task Force director of operations they immediately went to their best and brightest selecting an over the hill Air Defense Reservist to fill the slot.

But what was really needed was a liaison between the Task Force and the other higher HQs, something that I actually excelled. That to the point that as late as 2010 I met military that said they remembered my reports.

Yes, the resignation won’t be allowed to end the issue. And if this hadn’t happened, they would have found some other mole hill to make a mountain out of.

“Early in this race, Donald Trump laid down a marker on foreign policy against the Iraq War and foreign adventurism in general, and a lot of the neocons in Washington didn’t like it—at all. And still don’t like it.

Former Reagan and Bush official Elliott Abrams is deeply upset with White House senior aide Steve Bannon, after he was passed over for a job in Donald Trump’s administration.

Abrams was rumored to join the State Department as a deputy to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, but was ultimately rejected.

“The only person on the White House staff that I know was opposed to my being hired was Steve Bannon so that’s my guess,” Abrams told CNN’s Erin Burnett in an interview on Monday. “It’s a guess.”

Abrams didn’t mention that Sen. Rand Paul was opposed to his appointment, because of his neocon views.

“In a country of 300 million people, surely there are reasonable foreign policy experts who have not been convicted of deceiving Congress and actually share the President’s foreign policy views,” Paul wrote in an op-ed.

Abrams also ignored his role in the Iran-Contra scandal under Reagan, pleading guilty to misdemeanors in the scandal. George H.W. Bush pardoned Abrams at the end of his administration. He also didn’t mention his dogged support for the war in Iraq, something Trump remains opposed to.

At the end, Abrams had hoped that although he criticized Trump during the election, the president would allow him to join the administration.

Abrams authored an article the Weekly Standard with the headline “When you can’t stand your candidate,” calling for the Never Trump movement to challenge him in the convention. He also described Trump as a candidate was “someone who cannot win and should not be president of the United States.”

“Do not allow the Republican convention to be a coronation wherein Trump and Trumpism are unchallenged,” he wrote.

Letting the enemy know your likely appointees is a mistake. It gives them time to dig up (or create) dirt on them. Just announce the appointment, with all the pluses and any non-disqualifying minuses you can find, then shove them through.

It goes without saying that if there are disqualifying minuses there should be no appointment.
