Alan Colmes, Buffoon and Patsy, Was Fox News’ Original Liberal Weakling (Slate)
Slate ^ | February 23, 2017 | By Isaac Chotiner

Posted on 02/25/2017 3:13:17 PM PST by Brad from Tennessee

The death of Fox News contributor Alan Colmes, who passed away in New York City this week at the age of 66, has been greeted with an outpouring of emotion from the channel’s on-and-off-the-air talent. Colmes, it seems, was a nice guy, a good friend, and an ideal colleague: all qualities one would imagine people who have had to spend their lives around the likes of Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly would welcome. And while one should usually view tributes to the recently departed with a forgiving cynicism, in this case they are all too believable: Colmes was the most absurd, useless, and mocked television personality in America for many years, precisely because he was nice. In the context of Fox News, being a nice guy—and a “liberal” nice guy at that—meant being a buffoon, and a patsy. Colmes not only played the part to perfection—he defined it.

Colmes had a radio career, but he will almost surely be remembered for his job co-hosting Hannity & Colmes, the dreadful, morally bankrupt, Foxified version of Crossfire that ran for a dozen years and birthed the even more dreadful and morally bankrupt Hannity. The joke about Hannity & Colmes was always that Hannity dominated it to such an extent that Colmes was left as a mere bystander, asking soft questions while Hannity berated whatever liberal guest they brought on that night. This was of course true—Colmes’ air of nearly amused passivity became a running joke in itself—but it understated the way the format of the show set him up to fail. . .

My take on Colmes was that he was a bit meek and eventually...really didn’t even believe much of what he was saying. Kind of mailing it in, collecting his paycheck, and secretly wanting to distance himself from the real psychotic lunatics on the left. When it comes to our adversaries Colmes was never mentioned as one of the true reprehensible vermin (like Shaun King, Keith Ellison, Maddow etc)

He was a husband, a father, a good guy from what I hear. May he Rest in Peace.

"Alan Colmes didn’t taken non-liberal positions like David Brooks takes non-conservative positions."

That's a good point. I don't see Brooks much but I happened to be at a neighbor's house for dinner and saw the show on Friday. Earlier that day on NPR I heard the Maine crew say the R party is being turned into EthnoNationalists. Friday night, Brooks said the same newly invented vocabulary word and had trouble saying it. Obviously it was the new term passed out on the public broadcasting talking points that day.

The nasty little cuck twit who wrote this article.

I definitely think the first five words should be saved for this guy’s eulogy if he loses a cancer battle.

RIP to Alan Colmes, a fair and decent opponent.

I HATED his views, but for some reason am very saddened. I NEVER saw him as a mean guy, or bitter and angry.

Couldn't agree more. Was surprised how sad I felt. He was a good-humored person; not a hater.

He was even remembered fondly here on FR...VERY unusual for a liberal.

In the days when I used to watch Fox News, I couldn't stand him. Whenever I watched Hannity and Colmes, I'd hit the mute button (but still had to see his ugly face).

Nevertheless, I am always sad to hear of someone's passing (unless they're a mass murderer of some kind), even if they're a sworn liberal enemy. When it all comes down to it, we're all human and are headed for the same destination no matter our politics.

Death has a way of putting things in a different perspective. While I didn't like Colmes on TV, I still felt like he might be a fun guy to hang out with and talk to, as long as politics never came up. I do not get that impression from most other rabid, humorless, absolute self-serious libtards dominating most of the media landscape.

I should be shocked with this kind of tasteless vitriol aimed at a man after his passing (especially considering that he was one of their own), but nothing the left does surprises me anymore.

He has the same raised-eyebrow look that toddlers get when they’re about to suck their pacifiers or hug their blankie.

The only thing I can say about Colmes is that he always, ALWAYS, made me want to reach through my television and smash his smarmy face.

Same here, I hated Colmes. Now Fox has a black guy with glasses that is worse than Colmes. The guy is toxic and argumentative without meaningful facts. Can't remember the name of the black guy, but I hate him more than Colmes.

The rabid screed of the author, Isaac Chotiner, says we need to fund more mental hospitals. The liberal insanity in his piece is revealing mental disease. Trump is like shining a insanity detector over the land which triggers a flashing light: “INSANE! INSANE! INSANE! INSANE!” Helicopters can then swoop down, where workers can dawn straight jackets and send them to the appropriate sanatorium.

Hannity had a stronger personally and had the benefit of being right, so he dominated the show to some extent.

But that doesn’t mean Colmes was weak, I remember him as a vigorous advocate for his party’s incorrect views.
