Iceland's parliament is examining a bill that would require companies to prove they offer equal pay to employees. The law, which is set to become a world first, aims to close the wage gap between men and women. Companies face auditing and possible fines if they do not comply. Iceland was ranked first in the World Economic Forum's 2015 Global Gender Gap Index, followed by Norway, Finland and Sweden. However, according to Iceland's statistics for the same year, the unadjusted gender pay gap remained at 17%. The bill, which was presented on Tuesday, is supported by the centre-right coalition government and the opposition.
Applying to both the public and private sector, it would prohibit any discrimination not just on gender, but also on race, religion, disability, occupational disability, age and sexual orientation grounds. "The bill entails that companies and institutions of a certain size, 25 or more employees, undertake a certification of their equal-pay programmes," Thorsteinn Viglundsson, the minister of social affairs and equality, told news agency AFP.
The bill will now be subject to a series of debates, and if it passes, it will take effect from January 2018. In Iceland's parliament, nearly 50% of lawmakers are women, and a voluntary measure for equal pay across the country was introduced in 2012. However, many still do not think enough is being done. In October, thousands of women left work early and headed out on to the streets of the capital, Reykjavik, to protest against earning less than men. It echoed the 1975 Icelandic women's strike, when women did not go to their paid jobs, or do any housework or child-rearing at home for one day.

Affirmative Action on steroids. Employers will be forced by pay women more than men just to make sure they don’t get sued by the government.
I don’t know what gets people to overlook salient details like the degree of dedication to the job or flexibility required. This does vary by gender, although if a woman wants to go to all the trouble of being indistinguishable from a man, then there is no logical reason she shouldn’t then get exactly the same. I doubt that this is the problem, however.
“the unadjusted gender pay gap remained at 17%”
There’s the key, “unadjusted” for hours worked, overtime, time off, etc.
They may have to make it illegal for male employees to keep working after the women in the workplace leave in order for this to work. Some woman in the office takes maternity leave? Sorry, go home boys, we have to close up for a few months!
I don’t know what they will do about these other built-in inequalities.
What about the pay gap between adults and children?
Have some more Lutefisk, idiots.
The total degeneration of the Europeans. The reason why they are giving in to Islamophobia.
I really think those people need monarchy and aristocracy and I’m not talking Queen Beatrix or Elizabeth.
I mean more like Richard I or Henry V or Charlemagne.
Myriad factors go into determining an employee’s salary. Job skills, overall abilities, motivation to accomplish tasks, innovative ideas, ability to foster productive working relationships, communications skills, managerial skill set, dependability, ability to learn and apply new concepts, value to the organization, and respect of customers just to name a few.
In some cases, losing a vital employee or team member can really hurt an organization. They are worth a lot because they are an important cog in the machine.
There is NO LAW that can ever define what an employee is really worth to a particular organization. Only liberals would ever think of something so absurd.

Wanna bet that if this results in men earning LESS than women, that there will not be a peep about “equality?”
I’ve seen the employee evaluations where each attribute is rated on a scale. But how are employers supposed to prove that to the government in order to justify salaries? Government can only use the broad axe method of slicing everyone into equal sizes.
Iceland has a population of what, 300,000 or so? And most of them are 42nd cousins so what’s the big deal?
They can get away with screwing up their industry. Their population is the size of an American suburb and they have virtually free energy because of their natural resources.
I wouldn’t recommend what they’re doing in a real country.

Another good reason for business owners to buy expert software and robots.
In some countries (Finland in particular) a women can take up to 2 years for maternity leave. Seems to me that 2 years off the job would put that person 2 years behind a person who did not take that same time off. Is this taken into account when determining equal pay?
Men should simply “self-identify” as women while at work. Problem solved.
all these narratives are wrong..this is false like
Globull warming
minimum wage
men get paid more than women
bill loves cankles
warren is indian
rice broke no laws.
Live your life to the highest truth you know. I have had so much goodness come to me through prayer that I cannot even being to document it.
Ok that last one is true.
Freeps just venting..........hump day!
The most visible discrepancy to me is the shorter hours worked by women - even when they are handed high titles and salaries. At my job we guys just followed suit, working the bare minimum hours.
Stupidity has short term satisfaction for the perpetrators but long term negative consequences for everyone - so what will be the long term consequences for this stupid act?
