He was on when Flynn went off, why did Flynn leave? Leaks. Then when Flynn’s replacement went on Bannon went off. He had unmasked Susan Rice as a leaker.
“Susan Rice operationalized the NSC during the last administration. I was put on to ensure that it was de-operationalized,” Bannon said in a statement to the Wall Street Journal. “General McMaster has returned the NSC to its proper function,” Bannon said in his statement.
I think Bannon might be telling the truth.

these guys connive their way up thru the ranksEspecially McMaster, who was simply the nobody that commanded Eagle Troop in one of the most famous tank battles in history. His troop of 9 M1A1 tanks destroyed 28 Iraqi tanks, 16 personnel carriers and 30 trucks in 23 minutes with no American losses.
