Compensation?

That probably means vouchers and not cash.

Last week Delta was in the doghouse for all the delays they had, and I’m sure they were glad to see United so quickly take the lead for worst airline service ever. Smart move on their part, though likely they will never pay out the maximum, someone will jump before they ever get much over $1,000 on a short flight or $2,000 for a longer flight.

My guess is that most here will applaud this move. I don’t. In order to make such outlandish payments, the average price of an airline ticket is bound to increase.

Involuntary bumping and you fall under statute and they can ask for cash.

Voluntary bumping is different, I think you’d be under the category of funny money like miles, 1st/business upgrades, etc.

Still better than being put in the hospital.

I’d say some competition in the customer service area is a good thing for everyone.

“Voluntary bumping” would be idiotic. Someone wants that, I ask “What’s in for me?”. As has been said before, “Everything’s negotiable.”.

I accept vouchers for bumps all the time. Usually they are $500 to $800. Last year at RDU they paid 5 people $2,000 each to bump on one flight while I was waiting at the adjoining gate. It was graduation weekend at UNC/Duke.

Hot dog. Thanks!

That is good to know and the airlines don’t want you to know this because a credit costs them nothing whereas cash comes right out of their pockets.

Besides if I had a bad experience, I might not want to return. You are a free agent when you have cash.

Have a silent auction. Pay the lowest n bids for the n needed seats. The free market system is a wonderful thing.

You’re making too much sense.

grania is right. Your excellent proposal is making way, way, way too much sense.

To all the defenders of UA here in FR, I have a question for you: can you imagine in 1000 years, in 10000 years, in a million years, that the geniuses at UA who ordered that passenger to be dragged from his seat and off the plane would accept (let alone think of) a common sense proposal like the one just offered here by hollywood?

How about 10 million years?

Heck, I could make a pretty good living just moving from airport to airport and taking the flight bumps.

good, anyting to avoid physically assaulting your own paying customers

but it all could be avoided by just STOPPING the over-selling of available seats

sell the all just once .... and let standbys purchase any canncellation vacancies, and that’s as simple as it is.

period. problem solved. stop beating up your customers and sending them to the hospital (and attorneys, ha!)

In my lifetime, I've been on 3 Delta flights that have been overbooked. They offered, I belive, $500 and a seat on the next flight.

I was tempted to take the offer each time it was given...but in each case, I had to get to my destination on time. When I'm in no hurry, Delta never overbooks...
