GOP may try to require that people have a job to get Medicaid
Seattle Times ^ | 2/25/2017 | Abby Goodnough

Nancy Godinez ... lost her job... her unemployment checks had run out and her job search had proved fruitless.

One thing she still had was health insurance...

But unless she finds a new job, Godinez, 55, could be at risk of losing her insurance, too.

... Republican governors hoping to impose a work requirement on Medicaid recipients... believe that extending Medicaid to millions of low-income adults without disabilities... gave them an incentive not to work.

...Medicaid has grown to ... 74 million people... work requirements and changes in how it is paid for, could make Medicaid much more limited, with a smaller impact on the federal budget but more obstacles to becoming and staying enrolled.

...a new replacement plan... shows how far some Republican leaders hope to go in overhauling a program that has grown... to insure 1 in 5 Americans, including more than half the roughly 20 million people who have gained coverage under the health law.

It would give each state a fixed amount of money for each Medicaid beneficiary...

In return, states would get far more freedom to structure their Medicaid programs as they wished...

Work requirements have long been central to the Republican goal of instilling a sense of “personal responsibility” in people who benefit from government programs...

In fact, 59 percent of nondisabled adults on Medicaid have jobs, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. But advocates for the poor say low-income people often face numerous roadblocks in finding work. Some have criminal records. Others lack a cellphone or reliable transportation...

The Freedom Caucus changes to Ryancare bring it closer to the description in this article originally from Feb. Conservatives in each state had better pay attention to what happens at the state level.

If Trump increases the number of good paying jobs then Medicaid should naturally decline. Medicaid is a very expensive program for both Federal and State budgets. Its decline is essential to eliminating budget deficits. But Medicaid Expansion is the path to single payer. Conservatives will need to develop expertise in the details or be outsmarted on this.

One-time block grant to the states for Medicare/Medicaid so they can merge it with their existing state programs.

Shut down CMS.

From the article:
“But advocates for the poor say low-income people often face numerous roadblocks in finding work. Some have criminal records. Others lack a cellphone or reliable transportation...”

All true, but they conveniently forgot a biggest roadblock to getting a job: The continued fallout from the Obama economy. When companies aren’t hiring full-time workers, it’s impossible to get a decent job with good benefits. Thanks, Obamacare!

And of course, there’s the huge problem of people who are disabled, but can’t get on disability because the administrative law judges keep turning them down. I know of one woman who’s legally blind, which should automatically qualify her for disability. But the “expert” says this woman can (SUPPOSEDLY) work, when she can’t even care for herself! People like her would be doubly penalized, under this system.

I, myself, am battling the system to get on disability. I don’t have Medicaid, yet women who are healthy enough to keep having kids CAN get Medicaid, even though they’re not disabled!

The real answer to lowering the expenses of Medicaid and other government programs? Stop allowing women to have baby after baby while they’re on Medicaid. Want more kids? Great! Support them yourself! That would stop the illegals from swarming over the border, too, if that gravy train were stopped.

Government-sponsored breeding has to stop.

Able-bodied, unemployed people on Medicaid who are unable to find/keep a job could be used by the U.S. gov’t to help dig ditches, build “walls” : ), roadways, bridges, and other infrastructure plans our president has for our country.

They would get used to having a job, consistently showing up and working, and gain a sense of dignity from having earned their gov’t benefit.

No excuse for not having a cell phone, thanks to the Obamaphone program. Which is badly, badly abused.

Agreed, not having reliable transportation can be a problem. But there are always bicycles and scooters.

What about retired elderlies?

Move to California where they are looking to become single-payer, free healthcare everybody, including illegals.

Retired elderlies (if they are 65 or older) are likely on Medicare which isn’t the same as Medicaid. In fact, there is a lifetime penalty for not enrolling after your 65th birthday. Of course it is more complicated than that, but my mom has been paying the penalty of higher Medicare fees for over 30 years.

Access to the services of a doctor is no more a “right” than access to the services of a mechanic or plumber. Medicaid should just be flat-out repealed. Medicare should be repealed after that.

People have to have had a job in order to get Medicare. Why should Medicaid recipients be any different?

Not so-—but they have to pay for it.

I love it when a MCaid mom has the gall to brag she’s a stay at home mom - not because a husband is out working, but on MY dime as a taxpayer.
Something that working poor couples can’t afford to do, yet if you contribute nothing to society, it’s all covered. Insane.
And then if 3-4 people on fake disability live in one household, their lifestyle is truly above that of many working Americans.
