Born of years of experience with both good and bad teachers.

Today a 7th grader lit a pencil on fire in class. His teacher sent him to the Assistant Principal. His punishment: he was given a snack and sent back to class.

People just have no idea what is going on in schools these days.

Yes, it is awful. I taught in a public high school for one year — my year in hell. (After that, I taught in a private high school.)

At my public school, the administrators did not want to suspend or expel anyone. I am sure they were encouraged from above to keep those numbers as close to zero as possible.

There were some out-of-control kids there, but they had to practically kill someone to be taken out of the school. Sometimes — all too infrequently — the problem child would be sent to an alternative school for a few weeks.

At my private high school, the students were still lazy and lacking in manners, but I did not feel physically threatened on a regular basis.

Biggest issue is the widespread lack of parental discipline. This goes across the socio-economic spectrum. Kids are just not taught respectful and responsible behavior, and many of the parents do not act like responsible adults themselves.

Starting largely in the 1970s, respect in society took a precipitous dive. Women began showing disrespect to their husbands, and both parents began treating the children as equals. No boss in the home.
