There’s this new invention that would have prevented that - it’s called RADAR.

0230 local, a little more than halfway through midwatch, and Sagami-wan is a busy piece of water. Nobody on watch in CIC caught this, nobody on the bridge was on a repeater? Lookouts?

Yokosuka (Yoko-ska, the U is silent) is the Japanese port the 7th Fleet uses. Spent many an evening there, although I was Army.

Burke class. Big destroyer. Has two screws. Collision put both out of commission?
I’ve been reading some books about the Navy in WW2 and the surface battles. Those old Cans could take some punishment and keep steaming. Then reading about the Falklands and the ease with which a single missile could take out a destroyer is disturbing. Lots of aluminum now because of the increased weight from the electronics. Bad combination.
One funny thing is that antiship missile couldn’t penetrate even the bridge armor of a WW2 battleship.
