Speeding SUV crashes into roof of St. Louis home

Fire crews were called to a bizarre scene in St. Louis' Walnut Park West neighborhood on Sunday, where a car became trapped in the roof of a house.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. in the 5900 block of Lillian. According to the St. Louis Fire Department, no one was in the house at the time of the accident, but one person was trapped inside of the car.

The St. Louis Fire Department said in a Facebook post that one person was rescued from the vehicle and taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Larry Davis witnessed exactly how it unfolded.

"I'll tell you I've never seen anything like that in my life...and I probably won't ever see it again," said Davis.

He said it happened just after he got out of church on Sunday morning, which is located at the corner of that intersection. He started going Facebook Live on the scene. Davis explained to News 4 that the car was driving at high speed down Mimika Ave.

"The car was going pretty fast, maybe 80-90 mph," said Davis. Once the SUV hit the T-intersection of Mimika Ave. & Lillian Ave., the vehicle drove over the curb, up the small hill or terrace of land in front of the house and launched into the air, landing on the roof of a residential home.

"He never took his foot off the gas. You could tell, he never took his foot off the gas," said Davis. Davis described the unidentified driver as a male in his 40s.

"He was just happy to be alive. You could tell he had a couple of broken bones. It was visible, a lot of blood," said Davis.

The St. Louis Fire Department said the driver was trapped in his car for about an hour before he was extricated. The SUV sat on the roof for another 3 hours, before a towing company pulled it down.

The owner of the home told News 4 he was at the gym when his neighbor called and said, "Bruce, you got to get back here." Bruce said he is in disbelief but in great spirits. He also said everyone from first responders to the Red Cross has been great in trying to help him out. Neighbors said this is not the first time a vehicle has ended up in this same yard.

"This is the second time it's happened since I've been here for 6 months," said Angelo Bridges, who lives across the street from the crash. Both he and Davis said the intersection sees reckless driving all the time.

"People just speeding, not stopping for stop signs," said Bridges. "Our church fence has damage from a car accident that happened just a few weeks ago, but I've never seen anybody come that fast," said Davis. The city placed a fourth stop sign at this intersection after the first crash last month, but since the second one, the neighbors say that's not enough to prevent the problem. "They need to put some speed bumps or something down," said Bridges.

I cannot afford to Shock and Appall. Because I’m not sure if some of the statute of limitations from the 70’s and 80’s have run out yet. I was a bad boy. But I think I’m good to go for any child support claims at his point.

Back in the day, we *AHEM* 'appropriated' the mayor's Mercedes while he was at a state conference and took it down a steep slalom exit at over 100 MPH. We literally smoked the tires into blue clouds stopping on a right hairpin that put it up on two wheels. His son told us that for the next week, he was complaining about how 'thumpy' the tires were, and couldn't remember how they got that way.

No shit, Sherlock.

The more velocity, the more believable it is. Especially in the first person.

"Dude caught the handrail."

Actually, the path is visible to the left of the stairs. There is a line of bare earth gouged out of the lawn where the SUV went up the embankment.

It’s funny how some of us FReepers have stories from our youths that would absolutely shock and appall some of the other FReepers,...
**************************************
December ‘61, active duty Navy, home on leave, age 19, driving dad’s ‘58 Impala, fell asleep ~ 2am after breakup with girl and consuming mass quantities of suds.

Left road to the right into a swale and up the other side, airborne across a street and into a 30ft. oak tree in the front yard of a house. Hit the tree 10-12ft. above ground and completely uprooted it. Hit dead center and no glass was broken, but impact drove engine, firewall and all back into front seat area about 12 inches. Would have been inside that house if the tree hadn’t been there!

Since I was limp, I only suffered minor cuts just below my knees from the dashboard and got a cut through my right eyebrow from the horn ring on the steering wheel. That head cut was bleeding like crazy and a woman handed me a towel. People were all around in pjs and robes and amazed that I could get out and walk around.

Small incorporated city with only about 5 cops. One quickly arrived and took me to a near clinic and called my dad (about 5 miles away). The Doc was great and layered the stitches to close the gash and reattach the skin hanging down over my eye. ....The investigators estimated I was doing 90mph.

Next morning, Dad woke me about 9am, we drove to a Chevy dealer and he bought a new ‘62 Impala, while I had to drive the old ‘52 Dodge back home.

While that was not the last time I have imbibed to excess, it did teach me not to do so when driving a vehicle; ESPECIALLY one of the plastic autos being mfd. today!

That story sounds familiar. Uh... Arizona, Jato rocket bolted to back end of an Impala, teeth buried in the steering wheel?

It appears that he may have attempted Arkanside.

Maybe, but it could also be a future "Don't text while driving" PSA.
