Simple and obvious technique:
Reformat the drive, then smash it with a hammer, then load it in a hefty bag with old fruit and vegetables and newspapers. Drive 50 miles in a random direction, find a 7-11 and throw your trash in their public dumpster.
Repeat as necessary, one drive at time, driving in a different direction each time.
Honestly, if a “destroyed” hard drive is left around the house, it makes me think it was planted there so that it could be found by the authorities and judged to be “totally harmless”.
Especially, as we’ve known of this for many weeks!

This is VERY likely. Even if the HD serial numbers line up the internal platers can be swapped and viola instead of incriminating evidence you have exonerating evidence.
