The Climate Lab That Sits Empty
New York Times ^ | July 28, 2017 | By HILLARY ROSNER

Posted on 07/28/2017 8:21:59 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

BOULDER, Colo. - - Behind a locked door on the ground floor of a new University of Colorado science center here, a laboratory outfitted with specially reinforced concrete floors sits dark and empty, like a dining room set for a guest who never arrived. In this case, the no-show is a $2 million, 12-ton machine that is vital to addressing global warming.

The machine, a high-precision accelerator mass spectrometer, uses nuclear physics to detect the presence of a rare, heavy isotope of carbon. It enables scientists to distinguish fossil fuel emissions from all other sources of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, information crucial to monitoring and reducing those emissions.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration first sought funding for this program without success in 2012 and is trying yet again this year. But there seems to be little hope that lawmakers will finally provide the roughly $5 million for the machine and attendant research program. Worse, the whole national greenhouse-gas monitoring program may be at risk, if Congress approves President Trump’s proposed cuts to climate science.

Losing that program would be catastrophic to the world’s ability to track and address climate change. The monitoring system, called the Global Greenhouse Gas Reference Network and run by NOAA, is the most extensive network of its kind.

China is already heavily investing in atmospheric monitoring, including carbon 14 research. It’s just one more example of how an Asian superpower is stepping up to embrace the future as America chooses to render itself irrelevant.

Perhaps Jeff Bezos can pay for this. The US taxpayer is out of money.

They could start a go fund me and see how many rich celebs contribute. They usually prefer working with other people’s money.

That would be awesome! And close NOAA while you're at it.

The Sierra Club can pony up a paltry $5 million if they really want to. Let them fund their own boondoggles.
Oh wait, they suck off the taxpayer’s teat already. Let’s stop that nonsense, too.

I don’t think they really want it up and running, because it will only prove how minuscule is the proportion of fossil fuel sourced CO2 compared to natural sources.

Well, at the rate China is building coal-fired power plants, they certainly won't need to worry about how to power their research machinery.

Perhaps one day we can say the same about the NY Times.

Isn’t one of these machines enough? If the Chinese have already wasted their money making one, why should the United States be bothered making another?

Tens of billions in tax dollars have been wasted on global warming research... Man can not control the weather, never has controlled the weather and never will. Global warming is a scare tactic created by socialist and liberals to syphon tax dollars from legitimate programs to spend on phony baloney programs and projects that enrich them and their followers.

Remember the Movie “Contact”.

Why just build one when you can build two for twice the price?

Hillary Rosner imagines herself to be a 'journalist', yet she trots out ridiculous leftist falsehoods (that's a polite way of saying 'ugly Communist-inspired lies') like this one that only an idiot could believe throughout her writing.

She's just a common-variety, foolish-but-useful idiot wrongly occupying a position that ought to be held by someone more honest and unbiased and intelligent.

Evidently Hillary Rosner was absent from school when they held those 'critical thinking 101' classes.

Wonderful. Stop stealing taxpayer money to fund lunatic “science” which is really anti-science grant-getting. These warmist/changist idiots need to be exiled from this country.

Since China already has one, there is no need for another one. It would be cheaper to send the scientists to China. But since the author opened the door, we might as well go there.

If China is so heavily invested in this project and we aren’t, why did Obama commit the US to reducing CO2 emissions approximately 10 years before China had to?

Or Tom Steyer, or George Soros. Aren’t they VERY CONCERNED about climate change & all that? Lots of deep pockets out there to tap. They don’t need taxpayer dollars.
