Huckabee calls for repeal of 17th Amendment after healthcare failure
The Hill ^ | July 28, 2017 | John Bowden

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Friday called for the repeal of the 17th Amendment and the return to senators selected by state legislatures after the Senate GOP's effort to repeal and replace ObamaCare died in a late-night vote.

The 17th Amendment was ratified in 1913 and established the popular election of senators. Previously, senators were elected by state legislatures.

@GovMikeHuckabee Time to repeal 17th Amendment. Founders had it right-Senators chosen by state legislatures. Will work for their states and respect 10th amid

The Senate's "skinny repeal" of ObamaCare failed late Thursday night by a vote of 51-49. The bill would have repealed major parts of the Affordable Care Act, including the individual mandate and would have defunded Planned Parenthood. The vote failed after three Republican senators, John McCain (Ariz.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Susan Collins (Maine), defected and voted against the bill.

“We must now return to the correct way of legislating and send the bill back to committee, hold hearings, receive input from both sides of the aisle, heed the recommendations of nation’s governors, and produce a bill that finally delivers affordable health care for the American people,” McCain said in a statement after the vote.

With the latest vote's failure, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said said "it is time to move on" for the GOP.

"What we tried to accomplish for the American people was the right thing for the country," McConnell said early Friday. "I think the American people are going to regret that we couldn't find another way forward."

Huckabee slammed on Twitter the Republicans who sunk the repeal plans:

@GovMikeHuckabee CNN reports Dems will give Lifetime Achievement Award to Murkowski Collins and McCain. Schumer so happy he cried.

If Senators are not representing states, then why do we need them at all? Just get rid of the Senate altogether and turn its duties over to the House of Representatives.

To deny the sovereign people an Article V COS is to deny the American Revolution.

I worked with numerous pathological liars and even dated a couple (oops - big OUCH - double ouch). Oh yes, it was painful. All of the experiences.

I could smell Obama’s fraud a mile away.....

A manufactured past with doctored documents, a “Mein Kampf” book like Adolph Hitler, ghost-written, just like Adolph Hitler’s book and a we-are-the-world-antichrist agenda.

I picked up one of his books at Barnes and Noble and by perchance (or perhaps not) landed on a page that clearly told me he was not a Biblical Christian - despite him “quoting” the Scripture - much like his father Satan did to Jesus Christ in the wilderness.

Agree. Our Framers crafted the duties of the senate under the assumption that senators were employed by state legislatures.

To turn senators into three-term, at-large, roving state representatives was a horrid mistake.

Repeal the 17A.

The problem with that is the party not having a majority in the state legislature won't have a chance.

But at least it would force their voters to become more engaged in state government politics. And if current GOP control of most state legislatures could translate into super-majorities in the US Senate, future congresses would be controlled by conservatives and libs would be thrown into the fringe dustbin where they belong.

Of course, there's no equivalency between true conservatives and the phony GOPe of today, so it will be a generational struggle to re-educate the public.

That leaves only Paul, Cruz, Lee, Risch, Crapo, Barrasso, Kennedy, and a handful of others.

Nothing will change unless the 16th Amendment is repealed.

ALL of today’s political problems stem from that seed.

He might just as well have had a suicide belt strapped around his waist. Would anyone have believed, on 9/12/2001, the day after, that this country would elect a muslim / muslim sympathizer to the highest office in the land? I sure wouldn't have.

He did well in in his presidential run against McCain with some really great presentations about the Fair Tax.

The IRS has gotten so much more horribly worse right out in the open that it is time for everyone to take a look at it.

NO!! I would have NEVER believed, on 9/12/2001, that America would elect (even fraudently) a Muslim usurper.

Still in shock over what the Commies have gotten away with.

Not a guarantee Obamacare would go away. State legislatures like the Medicaid subsidies.

“... the reasons cited for the 17th Amendment were corrupted state legislators ...”
-
Actually, that is not true.
Chronic vacancies in the senate,
and the populist movement were the reasons given.

None of us would have ever believed it.

And yet there it was.
